One of the most overrated movies of the past year. I saw the extended cut with my ex this past summer and found myself very unimpressed with everything save for the production design and cinematography (Aster has a real gift for that type of thing). Her liking it made me also made me understand exactly why we're exes (incidentally, she's married to a guy not to dissimilar to Pelle in this film).

I'm gonna try not to go into a massive spiel since it's like 7:30 AM on the west coast, but my big problem with the film is the fundamental dishonesty of the set-up and its resolution. Not just contrived, though it is that (the main characters are obnoxious stereotypes that make the film difficult to watch and identify with, and that's coming from someone who loves Nicolas Winding Refn's two-dimensional archetypes), but actively dishonest. It's Ari Aster looking for absolution for how he screwed up a previous relationship by giving Dani everything she "wanted," but does so by making her a passive party to the slaughter of all her friends and trying to convince us that their petty nonsense merited such treatment. It's ridiculous and makes a mockery of feminist principles essentially for the purpose of making Aster feel better about himself. The "feminist" lead has no agency, the obnoxious idiots that "deserved to die" didn't deserve it, and the native culture we're supposed to identify with are really just unjustified butchers. I'm fine with making a feminist leaning horror film, but make sure your moral compass isn't fukked before doing so.

(I'd talk more about Hollywood not having to exploit white native cultures in their films now that doing so to POC natives is no longer in good taste, but I don't want this post to go on forever. I'll just say that Midsommar is Bone Tomahawk for the white upper-middle class arthouse set, except Bone Tomahawk was a better film than this despite being racist as all hell.)

Bruh you sound like a whole weirdo. How did you equate feminism with this movie at all.

You’re one if these people that thinks there’s no such thing as “just a movie”, that there’s an agenda or a message being sent out to the masses with everything they release.

I bet if I ask your ex this she’d agree w me :unimpressed:

:unimpressed: You'd lose a lot of money on that bet, those implications were the whole reason she even asked me to see it with her.

I'm not drawing anything out of the film that any other critic or even a few posters here haven't drawn out of the film (the people who like this because of its "feminism" are so much more insufferable than I could ever be). Hell, even Aster himself stated that this was written after a bad breakup. Not hard to draw the connections from there.

If you enjoy the film outside of those contexts, fine. Knock yourself out. But it didn't resonate with me specifically because of the disjunction between what it tries to be and what it is thematically, which definitely involves its feminist bonafides or lack thereof. :manny:

Beautifully shot film though.

I made the joke about the black dude even being in this situation in the first place, before the movie dropped. But the film clearly tells you he's an anthropology student doing his thesis on the commune's festival.

Where do I start?

Oh yes. Josh.

What would possess a black man to take a trip with only white people, to an entirely white country that you are unfamilar with and an entirely white commune?
That was the least believable part of the movie to me.

Aster should have just made that character white because I can't believe any black person would do that.

These people did too many drugs. Not the commune. The friends there entire relationship seemed to be based on drug use.

Christian and the dude from Bandersnatch were terrible people. I don't know how anyone was cool with them.

I was kinda happy for Dani, she got back what she lost.

Those saying that this was better than Us in the verses thread, I don't know if we saw the same movies because I fell asleep on this shyt and had to run it back to finish. US kept me engaged.

Aster needs to bring something better. Hereditary was great this was just mediocre.

The cinematography was the best part about this joint, I'll give Aster credit for that.

@Nicole0416 @MartyMcFly @cac poster @Jello Biafra @storyteller @BXKingPin82
The brotha was there to link the cult to the Nazis.

He was low key exposing that chipmunk faced bozo in the car and you could tell he wasn't feeling it.

Really this bullshyt movie was a vehicle to promote that bimbo as the new it girl in Hollywood. She probably a witch like alot if these Klowns She gonna get alot of spin from here on out

Yeah, because breh knew he was in a horror movie, right?:comeon:He went there to work on his thesis. He's an anthropologist, studying different cultures is kind of the point. If you had said dude should have taken the first horse and buggy out of town the second cacs started jumping off cliffs you might have had a point. Going there in the first place is not at all forgoing common sense.
