Final Fantasy XVI arrives exclusively on PlayStation 5 next month, but before that, it’s getting the Game Informer spotlight on our latest cover! We traveled to Japan and spoke with several of the leads within developer Creative Business Unit III of Square Enix to talk about combat, story, art, lore, and so much more, and we played hours of the game we can’t wait to tell you about. This cover story and our exclusive coverage going live on the site starting soon will bring you all the FFXVI information you need before finally jumping in to play it next month.

Welcoming you into our deep dive into FFXVI’s world of Valisthea, its lore, its characters, and of course, its Eikons, is the beautiful art adorning this issue of Game Informer. Our standard cover showcases protagonist Clive Rosfield and the hellacious Ifrit Eikon, and on the back, Clive’s brother Joshua joins him with the fiery Phoenix Eikon.

Quick summary from Max's preview:

-he was able to play for 5-6 hours and it was a mix of different builds and demos instead of a singular final build
-it has the best feeling action from any square game
-it lifts a lot from character action games
-Clive starts with a pretty basic moveset but the Eikon stances and abilities progressively makes it more complex
-the game seems to have a pretty good learning curve and doesn't throw the player into the deep end from the start
-the different actions are executed through button combinations instead of motion imputs
-it's paced like a rollercoster with impressive setpieces and boss fights. There isn't much exploration or questing as the start of the game.
-the storytelling feels closer to FFT than other mainline FF games. There also seems to be some GoT influences.
-the story is mainly focused on Clive and his journey
-the rpg systems are pretty shallow at this point of the game, most of the complexity comes from combat and Clive's kit. Some of the points that were showcased in the State of Play like crafting or hunts were not in this build.
-performance mode seems to be 60fps in combat and 30 outside of combat (reminder: this isn't the final build)
