If you want my one sentence thoughts on this game here it is: what Tales of Zestiria is to the Tales of series Final Fantasy XV is to the Final Fantasy series.
If you're looking for story out of this game you're probably better off looking elsewhere. Unless something drastic happens at the point of chapter 5 the game barely has a story at all. I'm talking like hey Mario Bowser took the princess go save her level story or Link go to the temples and gather the power and go fight Ganon. The story is about that deep so far.
It suffers from the same problem that Final Fantasy XIII did in that the game is so focused on the main cast that the world itself doesn't matter. It feels like the developers wanted to make a game about 4 bros on a roadtrip and everything else is there just to support that. It's a crime they removed the invasion from the game. you should have been there and a part of it when they took your kingdom and had you and the bros barely escape but instead you go to sleep in a hotel and wake up and your boy hands you a paper and tells you.
If the story was going to be this barebones why have an anime and a movie to further develop it? The movie especially hurts because it removed stuff that should have been in the game.
The protagonist is on par with the worse characters in Final Fantasy XIII such as Vanille and Snow. He's a reluctant hero full to the brim with so much angst he doesn't even know who to lash out at. at one point in the middle of a crisis he's bytching and moaning to one of his buddies and dude just flipped out on him like I don't wanna hear this shyt I have a job to do and that's protect you so stfu and do your job and become king.
It's weird what they've done to magic because there's so much collateral damage in using it that I'm discouraged from doing so. Also it kinda sucks there's no healing magic in the game to heal your party. You have to use items. Other than that the battle system is good. I like the warp strikes and team up attacks. The battles are chaotic but still fun.
All the side quest I've seen are very basic fetch quest or monster hunts. This isn't in deep Fallout / Skyrim quest line side quest that make you feel like you're doing something. This is more Dragon Age Inquisition style side quest that feel like padded filler. The chapters are very short, so are the dungeons so if you don't do the filler it seems like you'll blow through this game and 3-4 days tops.
I'm enjoying my time with the game overall enough to keep playing but after I see this through I'll probably never touch it again. I wanted a more story focused game and that's not what this is. Here the story is just something serviceable enough to prop up the concept of 4 bros on a roadtrip rather than something that matters. I'm hoping that changes as the game goes on but I get the feeling it won't. Tales of Zestiria was like that too. The story was barely serviceable.
I can see people who don't care about story as much liking this game more than me but I'm leaning on 7/10 at the point I'm at now. We'll see how that changes.
