FFXV does a horrible job with its story. Period.
The ending could have had more impact if they had a more powerful story leading up to it.

We keep tip toeing around this for the sake of spoilers but so far most people here have either have no intention of beating it or have already beaten it so I'll just put this out there for open discussion:
Chapter 1 - 8 is an open world with a ton of fun things open to do if you so choose. Hunts, item chasing, level grinding, fishing, chocobos, etc. Throughout this time there is little to no story elements outside of some horribly placed cut scenes that are delivered in a "oh by the way, this happened" sort of way.
IMO the cardinal sin of this game (outside of a piss poor story) is that Chapter 9 - 14 completely negates everything you did in the previous chapters. The few fights you have are boss fights that have nothing to do with your weapons or experience level, and they even take away all of your weapons and gear and have you slugging through the most boring dungeon in the existence of video games with nothing but a magical ring.

For me, these things hurt my overall experience way too much for me to enjoy it as much as I wanted to. I explained all that to support why I made the statement about the 30 hours before the ending.
Like I said a bunch of times before; there isn't going to be a definitive review of this game. Its going to very greatly based on what people enjoy most in video games and how much they are willing to overlook.
I don't see a right or wrong in the opinions I've read for the most part. To me, a game without a strong story makes everything I'm doing in the game pointless. This is why my favorite games are Metal Gear Solid. Yes the stories turned out to be a confusing mess, but they did A LOT to feed the player information about every detail possible and I love stuff like that. Every character had a story, and felt real to me. I don't see that in FFXV.

This is all without mentioning anything about the glaring mistakes FFXV made with the combat in general.

Ehh...outside of the complete open world segment at the start and the more from your eyes only perspective, I didn't find the story or how it was delivered too dramatically different from at least the last few FF games and if anything, was less confusing than more recent entries as well. I hear you on the Leviathan and Ardyn fights being irrespective of your experience levels and current weapon status considering that they give you temporal "god mode" status with giving you all the arms (I didn't agree with that decision, tho I did enjoy the spectacle of the fights themselves and only the Leviathan one did I feel to be gameplay problematic any), but no other boss fights or fights in general were as the case there really. Not sure how you feel that way.

How the story was delivered throughout most of the game, while not perfect, still was done in a number of ways, from the player playing through those segments, cutscenes, text, audio via radio at the beginning and just further expounded upon mid-game in-game visual cues (such as the desolation of the empire and seeing the remains of their civilization just being left behind clothes as if they'd gone to Rapture, with the palace overwrought with monsters and MTs only and Ardyn taunting you whilst telling what was the real deal with the empire). The main "flaw" was just that it's more heavily dumped upon come mid-game than at the beginning and that sideline characters weren't expanded upon more (Luna and her brother being the more unforgiveable ones). Considering the journey was with your crew for like 85% of the game, their part of the ending felt impactful to me. A large part of chapter 13's focus was about how Noctis couldn't be w/o them. Also, regarding that chapter, it was long, but once again, had plenty of story and reveals that was cool for me, and while the chapter's initial gameplay sections was a bit long in the tooth for sure, it's not too bad after you get your sword back and then, your party back halfway thru it as well. Your qualms mentioned before about the ring being too powerful and nullifying your prior levels/weapons seems kinda null considering that that thing takes forever to kill one person with it's Death magic and the Gravity/Demi magic doesn't even work on more than a few enemies at a time and takes a while to fill up, so it's best to use your sword around that point, which you get about an hour into that chapter.

I hear you tho about stories at times making or breaking the game (tho to me, all depends on the game really, tho RPGs are more heavily story-oriented than other genres). I think the story here was pretty solid, just the storytelling/pacing had issues that marred it a bit, but I definitely don't think anything made it seem pointless tho. I feel the main story, main 4 and main villian were great, but the rest of the side characters definitely needed more, tho I don't feel that they were completely hallowed, just undercooked for their appearances and motivations. I respect ya viewpoint tho, albeit definitely disagree with bits of it.

Been playing for a few weeks and now towards the end of chapter 12. I'm not following the story at all. At some point after I got to Tenebrae, I got lost and have no fukking clue what's happening.

Noctis is still traveling the world to win back his kingdom at all costs. There's not much of a story to miss out on.

Jesus Christ, the pitioss secrect dungeon in the northwest part of the map is absolutely insane. Just platform puzzle crazy difficult.

I will say, the post beating game dungeons and hunts have kept me very entertained
