I thought it was incredibly well written in the way it focuses on the brooding (sexual) tension between the characters. It broods and it broods until it is hard to imagine that nothing might have happened, despite the fact you rarely see what actually happens between them. It plays well into the assumptions and accusations characters make, and it works because those accusations especially are often more revealing about what they think than anything you are actually shown. The acting is incredible with career high performances by Fiennes and Swinton and despite being outrageously bold and on the nose in some parts, it also manages to be incredibly subtle.

I liked the third act far more than the first and second. I actually had forgotten that I saw it until I saw it on your list. I agree that the sexual tension was thick between the main characters, and was explored in an interesting way. I also really liked Tilda's performance, as so much of it didn't involve verbal dialogue because of her throat surgery. I just can't seem to remember what I specifically wasn't feeling in the first act, aside from a lack of intensity that admittedly was intentional to build tension to explode in the climax.
Slow year for me. I watch movies a lot, but haven't kept up with 2016 releases. Not a whole lot has come out that has interested me and some of the stuff that has, I still haven't gotten around to watching.
Captain America: Civil War
Rogue One
Suicide Squad
The Jungle Book
Zootopia
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders
The Shallows
The Purge: Election Year
I.T.
I'm sure most of these would've made my list, but I haven't gotten around to them yet:
The Accountant
Arrival
Doctor Strange
Hacksaw Ridge
Hail, Caesar!
The Nice Guys
The Secret Life of Pets
1. O.J.: Made in America
2. American Honey
3. Moonlight
4. Manchester by the Sea
5. The Neon Demon
6. Arrival
7. Silence
8. Elle
9. Everybody Wants Some!!
10. Hacksaw Ridge
I wanted to squeeze a few more films in but won't get the chance to before today. I'll probably end up watching Elle, The Lobster, 20th Century Women, Denial, Florence Foster Jenkins, and Hail Caesar within the next month or so. I didn't see enough foreign films, animated films, or documentaries, which is usually the case every year.
My favorite films of the year.
1. Moonlight
2. American Honey
3. OJ Simpson: Made In America
4. Nocturnal Animals
5. Manchester By The Sea
6. Edge of Seventeen
7. Arrival
8. Swiss Army Man
9. Fences
10. Southside With You
10 Honorable Mentions that were heavily considered for top 10, no particular order

14. The Handmaiden
15. Queen of Katwe
16. Zootopia
17. Captain America: Civil War

19. A Monster Calls
20. The Nice Guys
And for fun, the full list of the 83 films I saw in 2016 and the rating I gave each (using the double toasted scale) when I first saw it. Some films (like The Witch) I gave a better rating on second viewing.
