It wasn't. The movie was highly disappointing.......it went to far to make apologies for his actions.........when it should have focused more on the savagery itsself.
It was decent IMO. I can't get past the fact that it follows the same slavery film tropes. The scene with Nat getting whipped was in Glory, 12 Years, Roots, etc. The rebellion was too short.
What's different about this one is the slaves came together to try to save themselves. In all the others there was a white savior among them.
There were times in history where indeed both white and black fighting along side each other. But all slaves time films have already portrayed this. We have never seen the side where blacks rose up and rebelled to try to save themselves.

In order to get to that point we had to endure all the other things we've seen 100 times.
