He was a hard man who lived in harsh times. The US tried to kill him hundreds of times, supported an invasion to overthrow him, tried stirring up internal revolts at every opportunity, put the entire country under economic siege.
Up until the end of the Reagan era, Castro was under constant threat of a US backed coup attempt or an outright invasion.
How Castro approached that situation is a massive grey area for me. Im not gunna sit here & judge that when he spent decades under attack from a ruthless superpower situated just 90 miles away.
Once Bill Clinton was in office though, that threat level dissipated, so I wont make any excuses for whatever he did in the 90s & 2000s.
