Ferguson Man Forms an Inspiring Team with Cop Watchers to Hold Police Accountable
Amidst the infighting between Americans and polarizing coverage by the mainstream media over the justification of Michael Brown’s death, there lies a story unfolding in Ferguson that is less focused on the future outcome of the undoubtedly lengthy road to justice ahead of the community, and more focused on an immediate, practical solution for the citizens of Ferguson. Among the perceived heroes and villains that have played their part in the neighborhood, a true leader is emerging.
“If people knew their rights, maybe that can change things. You can only oppress a people who don’t know their rights.”

while i’m happy that people in Ferguson, especially poor/working class Black people, are taking political initiative to stop police violence, and while i do believe that cop watching is a necessary tool to combat racist police brutality, knowing ones rights and filming cops is still not enough. it cannot be our only strategy.
all you gotta do, is look at Eric Garner’s full murder caught on video, EVEN before the incident went down, and you’ll know what i mean. justice has not, and WILL not be served under this system. and we can name (only a few of) the countless people still beaten by police EVEN when exercising their rights. sure, some may avoid being arrested, beaten, and even killed, but these are exceptions.
we gotta think deeper, we gotta push harder, and we gotta be more radical to hit this issue at the ROOT. what we need is community control of police departments across the board with the revolutionary politics necessary to destroy white supremacy, capitalism, and patriarchy, in order to build a humane society where police are truly protecting and serving the people. and i have faith that the people of Ferguson will figure that out soon enough, if they remain consistent, open-minded, uncompromising, and resilient. and we gotta support them the whole way
