This was a bit too light on Newt, but I still loved it. Newt is very unlike any other hero we've seen in the scifi/fantasy genre, the first movie did a better job of embracing that.
I feel like his relationship with his brother and Leta was more interesting than a lot of the other plotlines they dangled in front of us. That +Leta's story is it's own movie already. Adding Newt's entire gang from movie 1 was already a bit messy, but then adding Credence and Grindelwald/Dumbledore again was perhaps asking a bit much.
Credence story was wrapped up nicely in the first movie, I'm not AGAINST him surviving but I think JK Rowling overestimated how much patience moviegoers will have. He's not THAT interesting to deserve this much attention imo.
He's basically like a Draco Malfoyish character, except the Potter books/movies did an excellent job of not giving us too much of him until the main characters were all fully fleshed out and we had the time to really delve into his story (Halfblood Prince).
Dumbledore/Grindelwald - I liked Jude Law and Depp way more than I thought I would. I think they both did a great job of just taking it a bit easy and not trying to overpower the scenes. I think JK is way more interested in telling their story than Newts.
I feel like they're all interesting stories but the timing was off. Maybe Newt's gang could've returned in FB3, and have this really focus on Newt/his brother and Leta - keep Grindelwald and focus more on what it takes to make a guy like Newt want to go to war. Him telling his brother "I'm ready to pick a side now" should've been the heart of this movie but it got lost in a whole bunch of characters making big decisions.
Same with Leta - she bought Newt/Theseus some time but I also thought she just wanted to die out of selfhatred, give us one more scene of how haunted she still is instead of Jacob being everywhere just to be there.
I love Tina and as an auror she belongs in this movie. Jacob/Queenie though - the Queenie twist was eeeh in itself but none of their shyt was necessary. Perhaps show that Grindelwald actually actively pursued Queenie to take advantage of her mindreading powers, instead of basically Anakin-ing her by accident. And save that for a different movie.
Have more to say but I need to see it again.
Loved most of it and in general don't mind the open-endedness, just think JK asked a LOT of her fans - this is basically some Deathly Hallows part 1 shyt except this is the second movie of the bunch instead of the seventh.
