The rumor is/was that Marvel wants to do modern take on the character which would make the holocaust irrelevant. If his motivations stem from genocide, the more recent ones would be committed against non-whites, which would make sense to cast a person of color, not necessarily black.

They could show that underground Hydra camps continued to exist after WW2 ended, and that they carried out a decades-long massacre in secret. Show how Magneto lost his family in the 70s or 80s in one of these secret Hydra death camps. Either that, or have Magneto get frozen/preserved somehow as part of a Nazi experiment, and then awakened closer to the present-day time where he meets Xavier.

As a last resort, they can just say that Magneto lost his family and people in an unspecified European genocide in his past without going into specifics (this is what the 90s cartoon did).

I'm not a fan of the thought of making Magneto black, to be honest. They're better off utilizing the black characters they already have, and letting them shine.

It's hard to see how Magneto's character would work if mutants have only been around for a few years.

Magneto's whole MO is about how years of oppression show that humans and mutants can't go exist. Doesn't work if mutants just popped up recently.


I think they're going to just have to say that mutants have been in the shadows the whole time.

That'll work. If they go the Avengers vs X-Men route, the Avengers could ask "where were yall when Earth was getting attacked by aliens and robots?"
