I personally don't know much about the sport, but the vast majority of hockey players online are saying it's definitely not intentional. Comments are about 20 to 1 in terms of accident vs. intentional in actual hockey forums/subs.

Did he mean to kill him? I wouldn't say that but he definitely kicked him intentionally and that has no place in hockey. That is completely unnatural to the sport.

All but a few people arel arguing over whether it was reckless or not, not that it was intentional. This comment seems to sum up the threads:

I'm happy to see that people are generally being pretty objective and pragmatic on this thread about the incident. The Hockey Reddit (I know, I know) sub is just every single poster trying to out-do the next one in saying that the opposing player was entirely faultless and anyone who suggests otherwise is a POS. That and people trying to one-up one another by how they would never watch video of the incident.

All I know is that obviously criminal charges aren't warranted but you don't need to fall in such a reckless manner pretty much ever in those situations. I didn't see enough contact to justify him flailing in the air with his legs like that. I'm sure he feels terrible about it, but that opposing player has to know better. I wouldn't want to play against someone who had such poor coordination that they could possibly do that again.

I didn't say it wasn't reckless, I have no idea if it was or not cause I don't know the norms of the sport or anything about skating at all. But "intentional" and "reckless" are completely different things. And hockey players in general seem to be saying it "obviously" isn't intentional like that.

The kick was intentional.

Nobody kicks like that in hockey.

And you also have to consider that this is really low level hockey on the totem pole of hockey leagues, so skill will be down and clumsiness and mistakes will be up.

That looked intentional but it's going to be hard to prove that in court. Reminds me of the Tony Stewart crash a few years ago.
