While it’s common knowledge that the path to a healthy life includes diet and exercise, far more people seem to focus on the exercise part and ignore the diet part.

Men go to the gym and do bench press and biceps curls.

Women go to the gym and do smith machine squats and hip thrusts.

Or they join whatever the latest fitness trend is, whether it be Aerobics or Tae Bo or Zumba or CrossFit.

But if you could only choose diet or exercise, diet would prove significantly more impactful.

So, fitness folks of the coli:

What are your culinary tips to maintaining a fit and healthy body?
Are you a meal prepper?
Do you use subscription meal services?
What foods do you avoid?
What foods are must haves?
How do you snack responsibly?

And when did you realize that Americans were less obese in the old days when women were at home cooking your meals?

IME, watch the sodium, use a smaller plate if you need to lose weight (psychological effect of being full), stop doubling up on carbs (bread and pasta same meal). Color your damn plate (literally a colorful meal tends to be a more balanced meal).

Protein will keep you full much longer.

Cooking and working out have been habitual for me, but I’m an amateur in both so take all this with a grain of salt.

Only one grain

Avoid white sugar, white flour, white rice, and other starchy shyt that's not whole grain. Don't drink anything other than water unless you're making a smoothie from scratch with whole fruits and vegetables. That's honestly half the game right there, if you just do that much and otherwise eat whatever you want, you'll be better off than 90% of Americans.

Personally, I also avoid fatty meats, don't eat bacon/sausage/bbq/processed meats at all, avoid processed food in general in favor of cooking whole foods from scratch, buy the healthier oils (olive, canola, sunflower), and eat lots of fruits/vegetables with good variety.

Doubling up on carbs is a good point.

Bread and pasta adds up quickly.
Good stuff.

Take your time while eating. Stay hydrated with filtered water as most out of the tap is just a chemical mess.

Most of the time I cook fresh.

No.

Gluten/grains in all forms are not good for you.

Mighty fine swine, tastes so divine.

By controlling your portions and knowing most snacks are made to make you eat more.

The vast majority of info out there on nutrition is incorrect and most of whats on the shelves is designed to keep you flabby and sick.

I generally don’t eat bacon. But I do like it. I just didn’t grow up eating it often so it never even enters my mind at the grocery store.

I do buy packs of ground sausage though because sometimes I’ll make a big pot of lentil soup and I’ll add the sausage to it (with carrots or whatever other veggies I want).

Then put into containers and freeze. Lentil soup is so good. And cheap.

Making huge pots of lentils and then freezing them is a cheat code. My wife taught me that one and we use it well.

The problem with cured meats is that they contain nitrates which are heavily carcinogenic upon processing. It's better to find the right combination of oils and spices, or find an equivilent uncured meat to flavor your soup with.

(I should have added earlier, besides bacon/sausage I also avoid all processed lunchmeats and any jerky with nitrates. If you look, you can find jerky without nitrates.)

get that “I eat for function and not for taste” mentality.

I eat the same foods everyday to the point where it’s just routine. Cheat day on Sunday. fukk a cheat meal, I take the whole day.
Eating for function and not for taste is decent enough to say.

But how does one put that into practice?

It’s like telling a kid who wants to be a basketball player “you need to work hard”

Well yeah, but that’s not very specific.

That’s fair.
Maybe I’ll just start making it with chicken. Or no meat at all.

Not sure I buy that anti-gluten crap but :ehh:

Gluten and dairy are two things most people live for because they provide an opiate like hit:

My main reason for ditching it was A) I switch my livit up all the time to see how it changes my mind and life and B) I feel so much better without it.

Wheat and dairy are really not that bad but what they've done to them in terms of biz is what causes the damage. Some say it causes inflammation and other symptoms people associate with aging and others say the flip but in my experience my mindbody runs a lot better without em. Actually fish and veg is the cheat code to lean mass and the rest but it gets boring quick and the smell of the sea lingers in your place of residence if its an all day, every day thing.

By far the easiest to digest and that is what should be at the top of anyones list because the body is constantly on its destroy and rebuild steez:

That and rest. Also check your cookware and containers as all that stuff can cause endocrine disruption which makes training and food worthless if you are ignoring the main problems that mess your hormones up from within.
