They not ignorant, they just have financial motivations because the fuel lobbies and automotive companies pay for them to keep things the way they are.
My city has subway tunnels that are half complete because they wanted people riding buses instead. easier to sell tires and fuel to bus companies than subways.

Some people don’t want to take public transportation. I hated taking the train everyday. Sometimes, I drove into the city just to have some peace, and privacy in my car, and not be surrounded by people. Plus, it’s cold or really hot in some places. The hell I look like waiting outside at a station, or riding a bike.

Too many sprawling cities in America.
Europe works because we’re naturally smaller, our roads weren’t designed for massive cars either, so safety is also an issue.
Also too many oil lobbyists. I remember when I was in Arizona and they had only just OKed the building of a tram style service, but it was super controversial due to to debates going on in the city.
