I went to a CUNY for a "terrible" degree and did alright. Really depends on your location tbh.
Plus, CUNY is usually going to get most of the same internships and offers that NYU students would. I have friends with 200K in Student Loan Debt from Columbia and NYU. I left with like 10K because I fukked around a bunch and graduated late. Immediately got my next job and I'm basically in a network of alumni programs. Just last year, I switched careers through my company messaging Cuny alumni.

There are other options, but there's a reason people DO tell you to go to college. It's the easiest path.

I'm not mad at people taking another path. College was barely for me. But, sometimes you have to just gut it out. I might be a lazy student, but I know I'd be even worse as an electrician or someshyt.

The alternative to college are either skilled trades which are expensive at those shady for profit schools. Sales jobs that rely on commission or self-employment. Those 3 aren't a magic bullet to steady money, they have cons just as going to college.

there is a differnce between being an unskilled worker moving boxes in a warehouse and a trade
becoming a plumber, mason, boilermaker, electrician, etc
no one is saying skip college and work a warehouse job the rest of your life
no one is saying skip college and work at chipotle
