Im all for players getting paid. But in baseball the years always scare me.

Instead of 10/700 mil, wouldn’t it make more sense to offer 5/350 mil. I know the players want the years, but as an organization, Im sure they would prefer shorter deals, shyt add another 50 mil to it.

Organizations get you for the low low during a good chunk of your prime years, so it's hard for teams to complain about overpaying for the front end of a big deal.

Also, gotta factor in the luxury tax. Teams would rather give you more years in an effort to lower the AAV to not shell out so much in lux tax.

Aaron Judge's first year of his 9 year deal, he made more that year than he did his entire career up to that point.

the funny thing is that in the NBA, the player option scares the shyt outta teams because players almost always use it. In baseball, you'll be hard pressed to opt out of a long ass deal even if you're good because teams will hold your age against you.

I’m pretty sure all teams would rather go the shorter route, but at the end of the day, the players run this shyt. And they want the years.

Deferring money has always been a thing in baseball. Chris Davis last played in 2020 and has deferred money coming to him until 2037.

Bret Saberhagen has been collecting $250,000/year since he retired in 2001 from the Mets, but no one laughs at that, only Bobby Bonilla for whatever reason.

Soto will sign a major deal---I think he will break $700M---and I wouldn't be surprised if a good chunk of it was deferred.

Boras gonna wanna get to Ohtani real annual value after inflation and all that which is ~46 Million. So 12 for 550-600, 14 year might get close to 700 if no deferrals. But he's probably 30 so you gonna be paying a 40+ year old for like half a decade :mjlol:

When the Ohtani deal came out I said it would be the worst deal we've seen as far as overall value.

Ohtani hasn't pitched this year, and even if he did, would not pitch for the majority of his deal. The basis of his contract value is pitching and hitting. If he can get 700M so can Soto.

I have a personal belief that Ohtani will quit pitching in the next few years, and the Dodgers will be stuck with a glorified DH.
I just don't see him taking on that massive workload of having to start 20-25 games, DH and produce 40-50 home runs every year.

Deferred money has been a thing, but not 97% of the salary. That shouldn't be allowed.

LA dodged a major bullet.

Soto was on the Padres before being traded to Yankees.

If they had kept him, LA prob doesn't get to the WS.

Bonilla earns more even tho Saberhagen inspired it.

Here is another one:
Fralic had an unusual provision in his first contract with the Falcons that guaranteed that the team would pay him $150,000 per year for 40 years, even after he was no longer with the Falcons and his playing career was over. This provision came about because Fralic's father, Bill Fralic Sr., insisted that his son have security in his contract.[10]
