  • Eric Adams was a registered Republican in 1990s, early 2000s

  • Adams said in an interview he would run for reelection as a Democrat

  • Adams is facing an indictment on federal corruption charges

New York City Mayor Eric Adams appears open to switching parties to become a Republican, as he declined to rule out a future change in political allegiances during a pair of interviews on Friday that came as he has increasing warmed to President-elect Donald Trump.

The comments from Adams, the top Democrat in one of the country’s most liberal cities, riled critics who have grown concerned over the mayor’s increasing willingness to throw his support behind Trump and his hardline immigration policies.

Adams, who faces federal corruption charges, was a registered Republican in the 1990s and early 2000s but has spent his political career as a Democrat.

In a Friday morning interview with the local cable news station NY1, Adams was asked if he would consider a return to the GOP. The Democrat appeared to leave open the possibility of a switch.

"The party that’s the most important for me is the American party," he said. "I'm a part of the American party. I love this country. This is the home of the free, the land of the brave".

In another interview about a half-hour later on PIX11, Adams said he would run for reelection as a Democrat but still appeared to leave some wiggle room for his future.

"So no matter what party I’m on or vote on, I’m going to push for the American values," he said. "And I think America has told us, stop the squabbling, leaders, and start leading us out of the crisis that we’re facing".

Adams won office on a centrist platform and has spent significant time as mayor quarrelling with the progressive wing of his party. But his rhetoric has taken a noticeable rightward turn in the weeks since Trump’s election victory, particularly on immigration, with Adams boosting the president-elect’s platform and appearing enthusiastic about the incoming administration.

Rather than restricting cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, as he once promised, Adams recently expressed a willingness to roll back the city’s so-called sanctuary policies, and he plans to meet with Trump’s top border official over concerns about what the mayor said was the "rising illegal alien crime rate in New York City".

He has also praised those in Trump’s orbit, including Elon Musk, who has claimed falsely that Democrats are illegally "importing" migrants to garner votes.

"This is a racehorse that wanted to run its right pace, and we’ve been holding back that racehorse out of fear of being cancelled," Adams said of the country on Tuesday. "And now you have a bunch of people who are not afraid of being cancelled".

The shift comes as Adams is trying to fight off an indictment on federal corruption charges while governing the city and gearing up to run for a second term. Adams has pleaded not guilty in his criminal case, in which he has been accused of accepting free or discounted overseas trips and illegal campaign contributions from people looking to gain his influence, including people connected to Turkey or the Turkish government.

Adams’ critics have seized on his recent comments about the Trump administration as a move toward self-preservation, accusing the mayor of cozying up to the next president in an effort to secure a pardon in his corruption case.

"Eric Adams continues to sound more like he is auditioning for a job in right-wing media than running for reelection in a Democratic primary," said Zohran Mamdani, a state assembly member who is challenging against Adams in the mayoral primary. "Eric Adams is in City Hall because Democratic voters sent him there. To serve his own narrow self-interests, he is clearly prepared to betray them".

Zellnor Myrie, a state senator who is also challenging Adams in the primary, said "at a time when the Republican Party has never been more out of line with New York values, we need a mayor who isn’t scared to call himself a Democrat".

"Instead of playing footsie with the next president, we need a mayor with the courage to stand up for our city," Myrie wrote on X.

Adams on Friday did distance himself from the Trump administration’s potential plans to carry out mass deportations, saying, "You know, I’m not for mass deportation, but I’m not for mass saturation".

Still, the mayor’s recent remarks are a major departure from his stance before he took office.

In June 2021, a few weeks before winning the Democratic mayoral primary, Adams spoke to a room full of immigrant New Yorkers about the challenges facing city residents who are in the country illegally. "Too many of our neighbours live in the shadows," he said at the time, "scarred by the abusive rhetoric and tactics of the Trump era and fearing a denial of their rights".

Eric outchea playing chess:ohhh:
He’s a figure head Hochul kept there because she is scared of what Jumanne would do as mayor even for just a few weeks.

Hochul runs the city and Adam’s is out here scrambling trying to avoid being prosecuted. I 100% believe he agreed to a quid pro quo with that Ice Czar that if Trump gives him a pardon he will support Ice activity through the NYPD for the year he has left as mayor.

Also it should be announced today that he is basically a lame duck cause the finance board cut his funding.

He’s gonna do his year…. Get booed everywhere he goes…. And move back to Jersey. The sad part of it is he could have flipped his integrity for millions but got caught out here essentially for the equivalent of trinkets. Like plane upgrades are nothing, he could have just rode coach. This is the most incompetent shyt I seen from a mayor ever and it’s legit embarrassing.

i'm glad he told the Biden admin to go fukk themselves about the border. someone on the left had to do it
He’s an indicted pariah who embarrassed himself as mayor and his only hope to get out without jail time is to kiss the ass of a racist convicted criminal and break up families of immigrants.

There is a chance by the time this is done even the NYPD won’t fukk with him. It’s like a remake of the finale of the show the Shield. His legacy will be that he is a lesson of what not to do as a politician.

NEW YORK (WABC) -- The FBI has uncovered "additional criminal conduct" by New York Mayor Eric Adams, federal prosecutors said in a new court filing.

Adams has already pleaded not guilty to a five-count indictment charging him with accepting luxury travel in exchange for political favors.

The disclosure of possible additional criminal conduct came in a court filing in which prosecutors opposed a defense request for additional information about the initial charges.

"Although the Indictment and discovery provide Adams with more than sufficient information as to his alleged co-conspirators and aiders and abettors, law enforcement has continued to identify additional individuals involved in Adams's conduct, and to uncover additional criminal conduct by Adams," the filing said.

Federal prosecutors did not elaborate but they have said in prior court hearings a superseding indictment is "likely" in the mayor's criminal case.

The mayor declined to comment and referred questions to his defense attorney, Alex Spiro.

"Even Ray Charles can see what's going on," the mayor said when asked. "I've said over and over again, I've done nothing wrong. Let the attorneys handle that. I have to run the city."

Justice Dept. Seeks Dismissal of Federal Corruption Case Against Adams
Summarize
The New York City mayor cultivated a close relationship with President Trump, who said they had both been persecuted.

The Justice Department on Monday told federal prosecutors in Manhattan to drop the corruption charges against Mayor Eric Adams of New York, claiming his indictment last fall came too near the 2025 mayoral primary and had limited his ability to cooperate in President Trump’s immigration crackdown.

“You are directed to dismiss” the charges, Emil Bove, the Justice Department’s acting No. 2 official, wrote in a letter to prosecutors, according to two people briefed on its contents.

The remarkable intervention by a Trump political appointee in a public corruption prosecution casts doubt on the future of the case against the mayor. It also raises urgent questions about the administration of justice during Mr. Trump’s second term and casts the independence of federal prosecutors into doubt.

It is not clear how Danielle R. Sassoon, the interim U.S. attorney in Manhattan, will respond to the order to drop the case. A spokesman for Ms. Sassoon’s office declined to comment.

Any motion to dismiss the charges must be filed in court and reviewed by the judge overseeing the case.

In a memo sent to prosecutors in Manhattan, Mr. Bove accused the former U.S. attorney in Manhattan, who oversaw the investigation, of bringing the charges for political gain, according to two people familiar with the matter.

He provided no evidence for that accusation, but said that the charges were part of what he described as the Biden administration’s broader pattern of weaponizing the department for partisan purposes.

Mr. Bove, a former prosecutor in the same office that is prosecuting the mayor, said the request to dismiss the charges was not based on an assessment of the merits of the case or Mr. Adams’s guilt or innocence.

Instead, he claimed the case had been inappropriately timed, and said the indictment would be re-evaluated after this year’s mayoral election.

The Justice Department has generally been reluctant to bring charges against elected officials close to any relevant elections, but Mr. Adams’s indictment came in September, nine months before the June primary.

Mr. Adams, a Democrat, met with Mr. Trump near his Mar-a-Lago estate last month in an unusual display of political, and perhaps personal, outreach. Days later, he attended Mr. Trump’s inauguration in Washington.

Mr. Trump has said that he would consider pardoning Mr. Adams, and characterized the mayor as the victim of politics. The president has likewise claimed without providing evidence that he was politically persecuted by the federal and state prosecutors who brought four indictments against him.

Mr. Bove also said that the removal of Mr. Adams’s security clearance, a result of the indictment, had impeded his capacity to consult with Trump administration officials on carrying out immigration enforcement activities in the nation’s largest city.

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan have said the investigation began in 2021, three years before Mr. Adams was charged. Just weeks ago, the same prosecutor’s office said it had uncovered “additional criminal conduct” by Mr. Adams.

The Justice Department’s request will likely be met with swift condemnation by Mr. Adams’s critics and political opponents, who are almost sure to claim that the mayor escaped accountability because of the good graces of Mr. Trump, and that he prioritized his own interests over the city’s.

In their indictment of him last September, prosecutors had accused Mr. Adams of accepting luxury travel and illegal foreign campaign contributions in exchange for abusing his office, including by speeding the approval of a new Turkish Consulate in Manhattan despite safety concerns. Mr. Adams pleaded not guilty.

The government’s request to drop the charges against Mr. Adams would typically be filed in a motion to the judge overseeing the case. The judge, Dale E. Ho of Federal District Court in Manhattan, may question the decision, but under legal precedent, he has limited power to refuse the request.
