Streams!!! get that bullshyt out of here. Aint no hip hop album ever gonna sell close to 20 million, so 40 isn't an option. If the shyt aint physical, til the day I die, I aint gonna give it credit. Especially with all of these bots. This is how we know the streaming era is full of shyt..... in 30 years since it's release, Illmaic is supposedly only 2x platinum. And I know it's sold over 1.5 million physical copies alone due to the 4 or 5 times it's been reissued. So nobody is streaming any old music but Eminem? No rakim, slick rick, bdp, nothing. Everyone else's sales has stopped, but Eminem show is at 40 million . haha ok... (and yess I know eminem has physical diamond albums)
A lot of old music gets streamed. Old rappers too. Nas is just not as popular as y'all want him to be. At this point MF Doom probably gets more streams than Nas:manny::russ:

We all know why Eminem sells so much, hell he addresses on the album this thread is about:manny:

But weren't record labels buying half the albums sold back in the day during the physical copy era? Bots would just be the current version of that. They count when the labels buy them but don't count when it's bots?

Not only is counting streams as sales goofy for the reasons you said, but another HUGE reason is that streaming simply takes no effort. Anyone can pick up their fukkin phone and press play on something. But actually getting people to show up to the store and fork over 20 bucks for you album?

That's a different beast all together.

Edit: And Eminem did that back in the day, so I'm not hating on Em from a sales point of view.

Look at the chart, then look at one of my earlier posts about why Black ppl need to stop looking through a capitalist lense that empowers White Supremacy by centering sales as a metric to validate Black art, and instead use quality and culture instead :sas1:

Y’all welcome :sas2::sas2::sas2:

THANK YOU

This shyt kills the sales argument

Sales argument = white people decide
Let's be honest, a lot of black people bootleg music. White people tend to buy more music & go to these concerts a lot more.

There is a reason why a lot of old white legacy acts still tour & make bread off their old catalogue.

Em, Jay, and Wayne are the only rappers who debuted in the 90's with good streaming numbers.

But even Jay's are carried by his collab songs.

So was OutKast being the highest selling only in the US

I remember back in the day the Fugess Thw Score did 17 mil and that was the biggest selling but don’t see any proof

that's the point I'm making. A LOT of old music continues to get streamed and hardly any of it is being certified with plaques. I forgot which rapper said it, but one brought it up a few years ago saying, "My album should be gold by now..". There is no way you can convince me that Illmatic, that finally went platinum in 2003, has been released and sold out in many forms the past 20 years and streamed heavily is only at 2 million unites according the sales reports. It makes no sense. And that goes for Jay Z as well for Reasonable Doubt.

I hear you but my point is I think you're overestimating Illmatic's popularity and underestimating the Eminem Shows'.

It wasn't until a few years ago that I learned it myself but cacs listen to the Eminem Show a LOT:mjlol: I've heard Without Me blasting out of cars and playing in gyms. I heard Til I Collapse out of somebody's car a few months ago:mjlol:

So again I hear you, but if Illmatic took a decade to go platinum, I don't know how many more millions you're expecting that album to sell:manny:

it's FREEEE!!! Sales today aren't sales, people are listening to it for FREE!!! A simple googles says that Illmatic has 900 million streams on spotify. That's equivalent to 720k sales not including other platforms. Right or wrong? So something isn't adding up. And it' snot just about Nas, but music in general. It's just not adding up and someone is lying about something. As many Dilla fans in the world streaming his shyt and he doesn't have a single plaque of anything yet. Not even gold. How is that possible? Youtube streams are counted towards album sales too and There are some dilla(even Rakim) videos with tens of millions of views. And dilla doesn't have a single gold plaque yet. So how does that work?

Yall saying it’s just them white countries, but I’ve been to Africa and them nikkas love them some Eminem :mjlol: And is it really fugazi numbers if Nas, Rakim and all the other greats albums are on streaming as well. It’s a equal playing field in terms of streaming(Ems a CAC so it’s never been equal in terms of that) and that shyt was prolly at 20-25 mil before streaming anyways. Not an Em fan but lmao at the cope itt
