ELZHI: The Lyricist They Don't Talk About.......But Why???!!!!!!

Elzhi is incredible. I was inspired enough by his rhymes to try to remix his version of "It Ain't Hard to Tell"

This is fair but I felt like he made it his own. On top of that, he had the audacity to touch that album and did it justice. Who else could have done that?

It was a great project, just nothing original or groundbreaking because he already had a template.

If we’re going to take underground heavy spitters… Blu & Exile didn’t need to recreate a classic to craft Below The Heavens which was a masterpiece in its own right

One Be Lo didn’t do a rendition of album to create Sonogram

Elzhi is better than both them nikkas but doesn’t have an album I can truly say is on the level of the aforementioned ones

He's incredible lyrically but maybe not so musically in tune. If we turn the BPM down to 75 and we put him in on a record with Benny, Ransom, Royce, Spesh, RJ Payne, Guilty, etc what is the chance of him having a standout verse?

I've always felt like his song sounds kinda out of place on "Welcome to Detroit". Dilla gave him some greatness but he didn't adjust his flow to it.

Also he didn't have the hottest verse on "Selfish". Having a quotable on that record would have helped his career but his verse was all wordplay and no personality. Kanye smoked it and T3 tailored his flow so that you can enjoy the groove.

I always felt like he got a bad rap for being the 'Consequence' of Slum Village, right around the time Dilla was starting to branch out and Baatin was going through his issues.

I personally like him as an artist in his own right, though

He doesn't have a big song or a truly classic record. If he did he'd be talked about more, for sure. I like his catalogue a lot, but there isn't an album in it that really resonated with the entire culture enough to get that big talk or big buzz around his name

Elzhi is in my top 3 and I think it’s a lazy take that he is just a rappity rapper. I’d say his main issue as far as being widely respected is that he had those quiet years after Elmatic. Obviously, he was going through stuff but Lead Poison took so long to come out that his buzz had kinda died down and it was such a dense album that it wasn’t as accessible as people had hoped for. He’s been on a strong run since then though and I think another Jericho Jackson album is coming too.

BTW that whole Jericho Jackson album was basically concept joints, personal songs, and storytelling joints. I think there was legit only 1 or 2 songs on there that were on some flexing skills and just rapping for rapping sake.

I know El was just down here with Khrysis for a show and I assumed they probably did some music while he was down here.

Kendrick is not on Elzhi's level as a pure rapper. Elzhi is in the elite of the elite. I don't care if I get flamed for this take.

He doesn't have a defining album though and that hurts his standing. I'd compare him to an underground Ludacris as in everyone recognizes the godly ability but he isn't viewed as an overall artist the same as the other top dogs.
