My take. The movie maker clearly had an agenda to paint Elvis as a non-racist. It's countless scenes where he's with black artists, him admitting he was not the King, etc. 2ndly, the main issue with this movie was the 2nd half. I think the dude who played Elvis did a good job painting him as a rebel in his early years. However, the transition of when he became a fat drug addict and cheater was not good. I didn't buy it at all. He didn't even know how tap into that dark side of Elvis.

I'll use the complete opposite: example: Denzel and Malcolm X. Denzel knew how to tap into Malcolm Little and then Malcolm X. This dude didn't know to do old Elvis.

They did mention Priscilla was a teen when they met, but they didn’t mention he gave her pills, dressed her like his doll, kept her pure until their wedding, but stopped sleeping with her after she had the baby. They glossed over all the affairs.

But Baz sure does love montages and fireworks. The cinematography was excellent. I think they wanted to introduce Elvis to a younger generation.

Its confusing reading about elvis. Some say he ate off our culture, some say he was a cool cac who recognized the black music and gave credit to us.
From what I’ve been able to piece together. He wasn’t racist. But he didn’t make his own music. He did steal from black artists. He grew up around black people, because his father got locked up for forging a check, and he and his mom had to move to the poor black side of town. That’s where he was exposed to gospel, and black music. Then they moved to a white housing project when he was a teen, and he used to go to Beale St. We know white people loved the sound of black music, but wanted a white face making it, so he was able to take advantage of that.

So it’s not like Chet Hanks being raised in Beverly Hills, and claiming to be a Rasta. He was really raised around black people, and that was his taste in music. He was limited in what he could do, because Colonel Parker had such a legal hold on him.

Obejectively I think the kid did a really job playing prime Elvis and a soso job playing fat Elvis though I don't think it was all his fault. Fat elvis needed his own movie. Tom Hanks was really good too as usual.

I think the movie skimmed over Elvis's relationship with that teenage girl and it did go into his complicated relationship with Black artists/music and how it tied into his success.

Biopics are tough because you have to tow the line between reverence and honesty. But this was pretty solid overall, imo.
