Alt Righters supporting Trump co-opted Pepe The Frog character late 2016.

Matt Furie INTENTIONALLY killed off the Pepe The Frog character in 2017 cause he didn't like how racist alt-right trolls co-opted his character and made him a symbol of hate.

There's a Netflix Documentary on Pepe that came out in 2020 called "Feels Good Man" which describes the series of events.
