Eh, you could make that argument for Democrat vs Republican, almost, but for liberal and conservative, they are derived from specific schools of thought. So we can quantify where someone stands by assigning a numerical weight to questions and determining where they fall on an axis between the two. I'm not really seeing how we can distance ourselves from liberal and conservative on political matters, outside of centrism, which is still within the realm of the two. It's like attempting to deviate from black and white, varying shades to work with, sure... But could you fathom something beyond that? Can you fathom something beyond yes and no? Beyond positive and negative? That's how two schools of competing thoughts work on the matter, a yes or no to specific questions or approaches. With your response simply determining where you lean and how much you lean.

I think if you take liberal and conservative from their philosophical roots, you will see what I'm getting at. And I say that as someone that only identifies as liberal, or a social democrat primarily for the purposes of a smoother dialogue, I would never self-identify as that and work from there, my priors/beliefs enforce my political leanings not the other way around, maybe that is how you feel? But I will grant that there are people that hold to their misconceptions of the words "liberal" and "conservative" and from those misconceptions they form thoughts the reinforce their basis.


Also, I would suggest giving this test a try to see where you stand as a basis to work from: 8values It's American centric, but I would honestly be interested in seeing your results.
