How and why would this term even come up at a corporate meeting

our company has a DEI department that has a block of time during our company wide meetings to have the floor to talk about relevant topics, educating the staff on stuff, Q&A, etc.. it just naturally comes up when you discuss pronouns, lgbtq+ and gender identity topics.
