that is true,,, b.u.t. we tend to forget Martin Delany, who is considered by most the father of black nationalism
W.E.B. Dubois hated garvey called him crazy, for wanting to go back to afrika... as I recalled, when W.E.B. Dubois was president of the NAACP, he wouldnt allow dark skinned members, only lighter skinned/fair blacks.
I'm familiar with Delany, but he gets overshadowed by Douglas.
I think what happened was that Garvey went to an NAACP meeting and saw only whites and fair skinned Black members. And when he and Dubois had their war of words, he painted the NAACP with that brush. Dubois wouldn't ban visibly Black members, but when Garvey wrote the editorial or speech calling them out for who was in charge..it was easy for the general public to believe that.
Every public figure has comments,stances and words that are hard to swallow for their admirers....including Garvey,but we can only judge them for the complete picture..warts and all.
