The Brits thought the same thing about Afrobeats not lasting. That was 10 years ago, and back when the genre was more obnoxious (Superstar-era Wizkid was WILDIN) and less chill.

Latin and African artists gonna be around for a while, especially more and more popular American artists continue to work with them. Afrobeats artists have learned the cheat code of putting a pop star on a bubbling hit song to make it go viral worldwide (Bieber/ Essence, Calm Down/Selena Gomez). Travis just had Bad Bunny on his first album single.
Fam, they got Burna Boy doing Tony Braxton remixes...people don't realize how OVER it really is for rappers right now :wow:

African artists are like 90% about relationships and hustling...the violence isn't there and to the extent its about being tough, not seeking enemies
So we can nitpick and discern lyrics that are “decent” when it comes to African artists, but we have lump every black American rapper into the drill or violent rap genre?

You know the point I'm making but you want to play this semantic game.

Do you fam.

Sexual lyrics are not VIOLENT lyrics.

Y’all have valid points. The UK is a little different because as far as black folk go there’s an extremely strong African and Caribbean presence over there even more so than here. I compare afrobeats and Latin music at their peak to soccer. The whole world can recognize it as the biggest sport but here in America we do not give a fukk besides the World Cup when people pretend like they’re into it. Afrobeats and Latin music will never move the dial culturally because we do not really resonate with it outside of immigrants and first generation immigrants.

Fair point. BUT...afrobeats is now a genre. You admitted it. It was created and it's here. Its on. So now we have to chart what happens but it's arrived and displaced things to establish itself.

Agreed. We’ll see how it plays out. I’m not against it. I just will never underestimate the levels of I don’t give a fukk what anybody else is doing energy that we, Americans, move with. We go to other countries and complain that nobody speaks English 😂.

Afrobeats won’t last. Just like we had a couple years where reggae/dancehall was popular. Latin music has always had its lane. Most people can’t name one or two Bad Bunny songs. Non Latin Americans don’t give a smooth fukk about any of that shyt. Rap isn’t going anywhere it’ll just continue to evolve into less bars and more beat and melody driven.
rap being less bars and shyt is alright if the music was actually fun like lil jon crunk era or even when i was in high school and travis porter was hot and the swag surf shyt dropped. this shyt today has no purpose.

I mean it's been 10 years since Drake, Kendrick, and Cole dropped and nobody really replaced them yet. :francis: The streaming numbers are big but rappers not really transcending like they used to. Lil Baby probably came the closest out of the new batch and even he's not a mega superstar. If you were going to pivot the business to more lucrative areas now is the time.

Yeah we never got that next wave after them of guys who were stars and could really spit (not talking bout Drake but point stands).

True. I remember those days when it felt like the DJ was trying to start a fight in the club playing Lil Jon Crime Mobb and Pastor Troy right after each other. I don’t have much hope left for where it’s heading but I don’t think the long term answer will be afrobeats or latin music. It’s gotta be something homegrown.
