The decline happened under Drakes watch. He’s part of it. His record sales have gone down just like all the other millennial rappers from yesteryear. He’s carrying the game, but not doing much to elevate it. In this modern era of viral music, the need to have a “savior” carrying the game is even more useless than ever before. If you like hip hop, just go to an urban lounge or sit at home and listen to the millions of rappers you have available to you at your fingertips. A rapper “carrying us” is a new aged talking point aimed at creating hero worship. Maybe the rap game needs a reset anyways. Ppl have been complaining about the decline of quality hip-hop for years. Now these same ppl wanna feign pessimism of major labels moving away from it? If this is what ppl are thinking, maybe Drizzy should really go the Hov route and make a black album type record or a what more can I say “what would you guys do if I didn’t exist?” record. :mjlol:

Ppl are going to dance with or without Drizzy. They’ll just play old Drake if they’re rally fans. Funny enough, Not Like Us kinda bucked the trend and sent a shock to the system. Everyone is dancing to that song. Like EVERYONE!

Drake revived Hip Hop. Who was selling records like that in 2009-10?

How old were you back then? :jbhmm:

I don’t mean that as an insult. I’m fr. This revisionism of Drake as the savior of hip-hop in 2009 no less, is kinda crazy. Drake was still seen as breakout artist up under Wayne and young money. Wayne was still seen as the big homie and money maker. Multiple rappers from that era broke out from 2009-2012. Some call it the 2nd golden era, becuse of the creativity that came from it. But in terms of record sales, hip hop was selling before Drake. The late 00s even in the ringtone era, was still chugging along. Drake being the savior is some fantasy novel. I don’t know where this is coming from. You had a southern horrocore hip hop group in 3-6 Mafia performing at the Oscars maybe 3yrs prior. Hip-Hop was dead in the water before Drake? :dead:

at this point, why would anyone with traction want to become a lifetime indentured servant for a label?

People always talking about the decline of hip hop like Boxing and Boxing been around over a 100 years.

At this point with streaming if you don’t have an artist you enjoy then that’s on you not hip hop on a whole. Making a few corny rappers the face of all hip hop is wack.

Truthfully it’s the criminal element that businesses don’t want a part of. NY has Hip Hop Police and it costs more money to put shows together because of insurance. Blame Taxstone. Tik tok music is cheap because it’s usually a one hit wonder who is singing a single deal or distribution for their song to be exposed for a little while longer until the next one especially with a song popping on TikTok it doesn’t need market research. A similar thing is happening with TikTok shop where people are exclusively selling items on there vs an Amazon or In stores and keeping more of the profit.

I’m not saying Hip Hop was dead. But Drake definitely helped grow it as far as gaining new listeners, especially among the young casual listeners.
