London baby.
normal for a Toronto nikka? Ummm, actually yeah…the whole mixing Jamaican and UK slang is kinda their whole thing…

“The Toronto Accent refers to accent and slang most commonly found in the city of Toronto in Canada. The accent has been described as a mix of North American slang, British slang, and Jamaican Patois.”

The angle here would be to lean on Drake using Memphis or Houston or ATL regional influences…but then you may start to realize he is more in tuned with black musical contemporary sounds than probably any one artist of the last decade plus…and had he not been the definitive artist of his generation could’ve made for a GOAT level A&R…it’s not an accident Kenny randomly is going to his in house producer looking for “hits”
A lot of Canadians have Jamaican roots so it’s natural some of them talk like that.

Drake didn’t have black friends til he was 26 and got called out for stealing dance moves from Somali men

So when Drake sounded jamacian or like he was from London that was normal? What kendrick did doesn't matter in a Drake thread? Or he upset you that much? But let's circle back, those accents were normal, crodie?
Of course it wasn’t.

Drake not only steals people’s shyt he writes songs for Dutch brehs with other men’s lingo too

The media flip on Drake is crazy to see. Elliott Wilson in particular.

Ebro hilarious. He helped and killed off the regional NY sound as the director of Hot 97. We gotta get this clown and Rosenberg outta there

Kendrick is only on the hook and doesn’t make records using traditional west coast beats like this. This is what we wanna hear Kenny on but he don’t make records like this until he dropped Not Like Us

Drake “sound” is what 40 and Boi-1da cook up for him. It’ll always sound different because they evolve as producers but it’ll always be distinctly their sound

shyt you could hear Drake “sound” on the Heart Part 6 beat. That is the Drake “sound” if you wanna keep it a buck and beats like that go all the way back to his Thank Me Later days

But nikkas gonna argue that Kendrick who on every album has a different sound using Drake’s main producer for most of them :mjlol: Has a distinct West Coast sound now?
The fukk you smoking on? Kendrick's main producer is Sounwave and he is from Compton. Even the Boi-1da tracks are co-produced by Sounwave. All Kendrick's albums sound like experimental Cali hip-hop., and he also occasionally incorporates g funk and always uses West Coast flows, slang, subject matter, and culture. Kendrick's sound is absolutely West Coast.

You sound stupid. The reason why Toronto and London have a similar accent is because we have a similar history with people from the Caribbean.

I don’t think y’all all woke up and decided to start talking like that in your 30’s though.

This is how all colonizers are. They have no identity, but turn around and steal from the originators. And then they got the fukking audacity to be upset when we:
1. Tell them to stay outta our business.
2. When we start gatekeeping our culture.
And lastly, when we call them out for the misappropriation that they been doing for centuries.
But it's some of these other clowns in our community that still allow these clowns in our business and they need to be dealt with, too.

Dot has always had a west coast sound. Even the Jazzy songs harken back to 60’s and 70’s LA.
shyt, TPAB was littered with LA musicians/producers:

Thundercat
Sounwave
FlyLo
Terrace Martin
Taz
Josef Leimberg

This is a dumb argument. Lets compare this to somebody like say Beyonce. Different genre but still. Ebro argument is what the racists would like to use against Beyonce. "Country music is ours. Dont sing OUR music."

Every great artist has reinvented themselves on new records and yes, moved into different sounds and identities.

Michael Jackson had the motown song. Then he moved into disco rnb. Then into rnb. Then into pop. Then into New Jack swing.

Drake actually is a genius for doing what folks are mad at him for. Using different sounds and reinventing himself is what kept him on top longer than any other rap artist.
That's not what he's arguing though. He's not saying that Drake isn't allowed to do different sounds, but that he doesn't have a "home sound" to go back to, where in a battle with someone from another place, you can activate your people.

When everyone heard the DJ Mustard drop, we knew what was about to happen. The early hype for King Kunta was that it was the throwback LA sound, sampling a DJ Quik produced beat, heavy funk inspired.

If Dot came out today and said I got an album coming out, with production from Dre, Quik, Battlecat, and Daz, without even hearing a single, we'd know what the album would probably sound like.

If Jay said my next album is produced by Premier, Q Tip, Havoc, Pete Rock, and Large Professor, everyone would be posting about bringing their Timbs out.

Can Drake do that?

This really is a separate the message from the messenger thing....ebro is 100% right. The way he b*stardized ny sound is a separate matter all together, and 50 cent called him out to his face about it before.

Drake is a man without a country because he represents nothing. And yeah, I'm discounting Toronto because they don't really count in this conversation.

Ebro is kinda right. The cynics and the Drake stans wanna dismiss it as some pro-black hotep nonsense. But when you look at it from a musical and heritage stadnpoint, its true. Drake can flow his ass off(pause) over a Trap beat or a Drill beat or maybe even a Westcoast beat. But we all know, he's from Toronto. So it's not gonna seem authentic, even if he technically did it right. Kendrick flowing on a Westcoast beat, off rip tapped into everyone's nostalgia receptors, and we saw it as a throwback regional anthem. Which in term, had ripples outside of just CA as we tapped into that CA nostalgia as well, without actually being from CA. You saw the predominantly/exclusively eastcoast Budden podcast doing them westcoast dances to They Not Like Us. It's like if A$AP hopped on a classic NY beat to throw shots. Or when Pastor Troy made No Play In GA, or when Lil Keke made Southside, or when Jeru made The East Is In The House. Drake doesn't have that "root" to tap into that makes the ppl say "Aw shyt!! He went back to Toronto with that shyt!!!!!":gladbron:

excellent post
