I listened to the 5 best songs

i listen to motion like 10 times. Y’all said that’s the best song. Vintage Nas they said. Those lyrics are fukking trash and the hook is awful. i can’t believe the consensus is that’s the best song on here. that shyt crazy

I didn't know there was a consensus, seems like everybody liked or disliked different songs on here...my favorite song is probably What This All Really Means as of right now

Nas use to consistently go platinum back in the day when tapes and CDs were sold in stores. Like did that whole group of fans just disappear over the years or what. I'm 38 now I guess my peers don't listen to hip hop anymore.

The fans didn't disappear, unless they die lol. Most people simply listen to less and less new music as they get older. They'll check out a live show here or there but aren't tuned into the everyday going ons of artists, they often don't know when new albums come out nor do they care. If you were young when Illmatic, IWW, I Am, or Stillmatic came out there's nothing Nas can do today to outdo that shyt. Which means creating new fans is key.

If Jay dropped an album next month it would do over 150k first week. It's very rare for any 80s/90s era artist to do that today, across all genres. Metallica did 150k first week in April of this year. Maybe U2 could do six figures still; their last album in 2017 did nearly 200k. Madonna almost did 100k in 2019. Only way you pull that off is by constantly having projects that bring new fans into the fold. And you do that by successfully re-inventing yourself, making yourself current, etc. Jay did that a decade ago with MCHG and is still reaping benefits from it. Multiple generations of fans who have a different favorite album or moment. That's not really the case with Nas, whose last hit was 20 years ago and hasn't really had an album that young people grew up on since then too (God's Son). I don't think it's a coincidence that most of the biggest Nas fans here were in HS or college-aged when Stillmatic/God's Son came out. That's basically the last generation of dedicated stans who grew up when Nas was in the mix (radio, hits, platinum albums, beefs, news stories, etc).

People typically listen to less NEW music as they get older even from their favorite artist. People that post in the booth are a niche crowd

The game is different now.

Like @Piff Perkins said, Nas has an older fanbase who still boys physicals. He cleans up on merch and physicals but physicals don’t count until they’re actually shipped and on the website the physicals don’t count because they won’t ship until November.

Billboard counts bundles now but there are no bundles for Magic 2.

Streaming is the name of the game but again, an older fanbase isn’t going to realistically join in on streaming parties. I have because this has been the perfect month for ME because i’ve got some free time and the plug chick gives great info. She’s got good intentions too, its just that Nas will more than likely never be a big streaming artist. He’ll always benefit from a more traditional album rollout, but that means doing certain things he’s always hated like interviews with these same DJ’s who will praise him to his face but not play his songs on their programs.

Nas is still a commercially viable artist. Mass Appeal has done a GREAT job with licensing his music to tv and film. His placements on two blockbuster movie soundtracks was great. But Nas doesn’t want to play the proverbial “game” when it comes to streams and thats ok. At 50 years old putting out incredible albums that still excite the fanbase is an incredible feat. No other 50 year old has accomplished what Nas has. No other MC that debuted in 1994 is selling 10k, let alone 20K. He’ll more than likely be up for his 19th Grammy nomination next year, making him the oldest ever MC nominated for Best Rap Album. As long as he keeps dropping fire the core fans WILL support beyond album sales. The man sold out MSG with a Kings Disease themed concert. NOT Illmatic. NOT It Was Written. NOT Stillmatic. The album series he started THIS decade
