To those contemplating, I had locks for 10 years (I’m black) and cut them thinking it would help me progress into management here in the medical field.

When I interviewed HR asked why I cut them and seemed disappointed they were gone. It wouldn’t have mattrerd. I should have known because I’ve seen senior Lab technicians in the hospital with serious degrees with long azz locs. Growing them back now....

I’m in TX if that matters....

A lot of my family are Rastas, so them wearing dreads comes from the fact that they believe Jah ordered them not to be bald headed. But also, the reason they're even called "dread locks" instead of just locks/locs is because they're commemorating slaves coming off slave ships and arriving in the Americas with matted unkempt hair. The slave masters referred to them as "dreadful".

Why white people would wear dreads is beyond me, it's disrespectful, and appropriating a culture that was the result of them destroying it in the first place is a joke to me. White people were the reason dreadlocks were created anyway. They make fun of our hair textures, but as soon as we celebrate them, they wanna join in? fukk outta here. :rudy:
I read somewhere that the mau mau warred with whites and wore them.as a sign of pride. I also heard whites came to dread the locked hair as a sign of defiance.

Smh life lessons man...

I was thinking about cutting mine to finally conform to society.

But I'd just be the same nikka without them. Most dudes that cut them regret it, some get their shyts put back.

It just fits. I hate all the negative stereotypes people perpetuate against having them. Breaks my heart when our own people do it too

Mines are now a few inches away from my knee..but I need to find a hat to wear them in now...slamming them into the car door and sitting on them isn't cool

That's why I thought Howard making people cut their dreads before starting their MBA was some c00n shyt. I see lots of professionals with them. The nurse/midwife for both of my kids had them all the way down to her waist. There was a brother that worked at the White House that had them. Brent Jones, editor for USA Today has them. I get compliments on mine all the time from higher ups at work.

Reassuring. I've had a couple existential crisises about cutting mine

Bee not having mine about 8 yrs. They're half way down my back. Before I applied for PT school I thought about cutting them and was like 50/50 with the ppl I asked if I should or not. I ended up not cutting them and still getting into PT school. I'm now working as a PT in hospitals/clinics and haven't gotten any shyt from anyone and I only twist once every 2-3 months, not trying to thin mine out or lose my hairline.
