Dragon Age: The Veilguard (October 31, 2024)

I forgot to double back in the Discord once I finished it, but the game gets better further in. You can tell the early hours of the game are definitely what got reworked the most, since that's where some of the worst dialogue is. You could definitely play a dangerous ass drinking game based off of how lazily they throw around the phrase "Elgarnan and Ghilinain" though.

The story beats and set pieces in the mid to late game are definitely good, though. You can tell that, for better or worse, this was made by people who think Mass Effect 2 is Bioware's best game, and tried their best to make a Dragon Age version of that. Solid 7/10. Fun, not something I'd call great, but definitely not a piece of shyt.

To me they half assed the story and treated the companion quests with kid gloves. I’m all for picking a definitive canon route from past games for simplicity’s sake, but go in on it and surprise us with the decisions you went with.

Part of me feels we should’ve just resumed the role of Inquisitior and recruited/brought back the old gang on some Expendables ish, if the story was to be so intricately tied to DA:I.

As is, there was no weight to Rook as an MC, nor his Disney’fied companions.

Did you not like DAI either?

I think the first 3 games in the series are great…with some issues, but they have fantastic writing. DA2 was well written, but rushed. They reused too many environments.

I enjoyed DAI’s combat, but most didn’t. And the open world side quests were dry as hell.

+set pieces are interesting
+some good choices matter

Pros:

Pretty good story.
Gameplay/action is solid.

If you've been playing the series all along, there are legitimately crazy payoffs for shyt set up throughout the series.

The larger setpiece missions are great.

The game sets out to make Solas the most important character in the Dragon Age series thus far, and it actually pulls it off in an interesting way.

Cons:
Early dialogue is fukking dogwater.

If you came in expecting ALL of your choices from other games to be acknowledged, that shyt ain't happening.

If you don't like the trend of "cozy" character interactions, relationships with the rest of the party can come off cheesy at times.

Chances are you'll need to tinker with the difficulty settings as the game goes on, because around the mid point of character progression, you can work your way toward being a walking nuke, regardless of class. It'll just be a difference of how mindful you need to be of timely dodges and counters.

also, i started the game as rogue, and then switched to warrior on a new save and i have to say warrior >>>>>>>>>>>

throwing the shield around really makes you feel like captain america as you get stronger, just being able to kick and knock people off ledges and shyt also

Started the game yesterday as a Warrior. The art style reminds me of what Avowed looks like even though Avowed is not out yet. I have no complaints about that but completed the first mission.
