Under Republicans’ SAVE Act, your driver’s license won’t be enough to vote.
You’ll need:
1. A passport, which more than half of Americans don’t have and costs at least $130
OR
2. A birth certificate with your current legal name, which nearly 70 million married women lack
OR
3. Military services papers (not a military ID alone) with sensitive info
I’ll be blunt. This is a modern-day Jim Crow bill that restricts access to the ballot box.

@mrjeanphilippe
Then the State Department which issues passports will be stripped of the employees necessary to process new passport applications
The United States Post Office will be stripped of the employees and funding required to deliver the newly approved passports in a timely manner

The bill allows a birth certificate as proof of citizenship, but it must be paired with a government-issued photo ID (like a driver’s license) if it’s not a standalone photo document. For the roughly 69 million women who have changed their names after marriage (per Center for American Progress estimates), their birth certificates often list their maiden names, which may not match their current legal name on other IDs. The SAVE Act instructs states to create a process for resolving name discrepancies with additional documents (e.g., marriage certificates), but it’s unclear how burdensome this would be in practice. Critics argue this ambiguity could disproportionately affect married women, and the 69 million figure aligns with analyses of name changes. This part is largely accurate but depends on implementation.

@AmericaRus2024
I agree to the terms. If you don't have enough skin in the game to vote, you shouldn't be voting.

@LegalLatino2022
I have a passport. Very proud of it too.

These things are all part of being an adult, they are not difficult.

@SwimmingSF
What was the national “real id” roll out for then?

@EchoTheAlt
Thank you to Republicans for taking election integrity seriously!

@mrkellywright
If it is Real ID compliant it is all you need. Typical that Congress can require people to have this to fly, and they claim it's not possible for regular people to do
