Classic as in hip hop? or as a staple of what makes Nas, "Nas" and Kendrick Lamar, "Kendrick Lamar"?

Its a generational and demographic argument to be honest with you.

Depending on who you listen people will say Nas only had Illmatic. But if you grew up in the mid 90s and early 00s and were of the era of New York Street rap, even if flawed Stillmatic and It was Written had a lot of impact

On the flip side, while Kendrick is unquestionably the best rapper of this decade, you could make an argument in the era of hipster writers and young social media fans over-championing their favs that maybe Kendrick's albums get over-inflated in their rating cause of the era he's in (which is weird because I dont think this era is that weak either).

Some people always gonna ride with Nas cause always had anthems from that era, creative narratives and street perspectives while they may think Kendrick's voice is too corny and is over layered.

Others might find Nas' style boring cause he doesnt rap like Eminem/Wayne/Kendrick and has a lot of 808s

Both guys have had multiple albums reviewed and given close or close to perfect ratings by both old and new music institutes but even that can come into question depending on what you think of them.

The only weakness Nas has is consistency....Most rappers just fall off after a long while...Where as Nas would drop a weak Nastradamus but, follow up with a classic Stillmatic. Nas' bad beat selection is largely exaggerated tho, although I do wish he stuck with premo more.
Nastradamus is better than Kendricks best. BY FAR!!!!!!!

Were people as hyped on Nas when he came out? I'm not gonna speak on classics, but I'm wondering if Nas had the commercial success Kendrick does? I was young and on the West Coast :pachaha:

Nas dropping an album always felt like an event, especially like It Was Written and I am and the lead up to them.

Nas has 3 definite classics under his belt which are universally praised. Illmatic, IWW and Stillmatic and granted IWW wasn't too well received at first but as time passed its merits have risen.

Kenny got 1 universally praised album in GKMC and some stellar projects. He is the best pound for pound rapper in this generation. But Nas is the goat. Period.

The only thing Kendrick has over Nas is that people NEVER tried to pigeonhole Kendrick like they did Nas. People tried to crucify Nas when he didn't release Illmatic part 2 and went a bigger more expansive route with his music. Nas pretty much had to tell the world to kiss his ass while Kendrick has been given the grace to do what he wants and be appreciated for it.

Both have 2 legit classics and one arguable classic and both have a strong compilation album to their name.

What sets Nas apart is he's been 25 years in the game going STRONG. His lyricism hasn't fell off one bit across TEN albums, two group projects, and countless features. Honestly it's disrespectful to compare Nas or his career to anyone not named Jay-Z, Common, Ghostface, LL (people sweep his longetivity under the rug) or Black Thought.
