Has society recovered from the negative impact of crack cocaine addiction from 1983 to the present?
No. And has society recovered from the wide spread obesity, diabetes, intestinal failure and brain damage caused by alcohol consumption?

Crack’s impact on society as a whole doesn’t hold a candle to how a culture of normalized alcoholism has damaged society.

Above the fray.

Morgues, prisons, needs for social services swelled in the first 7 years of crack being introduced. I was alive to see it, and the people and communities impacted haven't fully recovered since.

The health effects of alcohol use on the person addicted are real, but the crack addiction epidemic produced a large % of people who could no longer function. So besides the health effects on them, their spouses and children suffered. And like the member pointed out about modern addicts/crime.....crack addicts did all types of crimes to feed their habits, so they impacted the lives of their neighbors and businesses that they victimized for money. Since they could no longer function in society.

Why even bring up alcohol in this conversation, other than the drunk leaving a bar stepping over a heroin addict as they get in their Uber.

Yes. Then we can help people who are on them and addicted, instead of criminalizing them.

Before crack it was heroin. Crack epidemic wasn’t unique. Crack was never socially acceptable or consumed by the masses. Crack users were considered dregs of society. Alcoholism is celebrated in our society. While the average crack addict is worse off than the average alcoholic. Alcoholism is 1000x more wide spread than crack ever has been.

We’re talking about the larger societal impact, not the impact on the individual. Excessive alcohol consumption takes about 180k lives in the U.S. alone. It’s has never been close.

Not without proper mental health care structures in place, or just health structures that are light years ahead of what the US provides.

The country isn’t ready to have that conversation because culturally we don’t really care so much about health or our system isn’t designed to ensure average citizens have access to these avenues.
