Do you think Biden made the right call in Afghanistan? And if not, what should he have done?

Did Biden make the right call in Afghanistan?

No, he should have had every soldier throw 2 fingers in the air in the way out. Then announce that any Afghani politicians who fled the country will have all their assets they embezzled from their government seized

Uncertain grounds
Perhaps they should have left in May as originally planned before the Taliban had finalized deals to take local control of every remaining provincial capital.

But I still think there would have been some kind of shid show either way

who knows

there may have been more bloodshed then. i was going to say that perhaps the afghan govt could have survived but that would have been under wishful conventional rationalism whereas its now clear that the government was completely phony

North Jersey but I miss Cali :sadcam:
From everything I’ve read, the people they trained were all from different tribes that didn’t fukk with each other. The idea of fighting for one United “Afghan” country was never something that appealed them in the first place. So when met with resistance from the taliban without the presence of US soldiers, they quickly surrendered.

I heard the taliban is letting most of them go after surrendering their weapons and identification. The Afghans don’t want any smoke

it was just a bunch of people who wanted to get a paycheck. Nothing more.

The same people asking for the full withdrawal of the US military from playing world police and nation building are now trying to make nuanced withdrawal (read: permanent occupation) arguments?

Right move. Terrible execution.

I feel bad for all my buddies in the military. They got ptsd and substance abuse problems so the taliban could waltz right in and take Kabul.
some 18 year old today would then have his buddies have PTSD and substance abuse problems in the future so the taliban couldn't waltz right in take Kabul.

This is a binary choice, in a world where there are very few.

1. You are in favor of perpetual occupation

2. You are in favor of pulling out.

If youre in favor of #2 - there's not a lot of criticism to be had. There is no reality where the pull out would have gone smoothly. Sure it's not been ideal, there have been mistakes, but there was no way to do this in a way that satisfied all the stake holders.

All the pearl clutching about the Afghan people is a bit much for me. Where was all this outrage when we were bombing civilians the past 20 years? It's all performative outrage.

Should have never gone in there in the first place. Definitely shouldn't have taken 20 years to realise that the majority of the people there are more aligned to the taliban than the warlords who were pocketing the billions being put into the country along with the Ngos and contractors.
