You can find a GDP per capita table just as easily as me and see which European countries have a higher and/or comparable standard of living

People weren’t affording homes alone for most of that time, women were heavily in the workforce by the 70’s and contributing to household bills

Solutions are - accept that we need to scale down, you are not entitled to a SFH and those who buy a SFH need to stop thinking 3000 sq ft is moderate…a 5 person family can live quite comfortably in 1500 sq ft - my family did. Yes, move back in with parents and add your income - 3 incomes is better than two, if they are struggling, it’s only going to get easier having a third to split bills with. Yes, have roommates. Yes, buy a home with friends if you can’t afford one alone and you don’t have an S/O to buy with. More multifamily housing needs to be built and people need to accept this as a way of living, especially singles and DINKs

You’re not presenting any solutions yourself. Crying on TikTok isn’t going to change where we are. Housing (single family particularly) will continue to get more scarce and rents will keep increasing. Short of revolution, people need to figure out how to make it work. Prior to getting engaged, I came to the realization I wasn’t buying shyt out here in the Bay despite making good money, and that’s fine, I was willing to rent and invest elsewhere or buy elsewhere. Life ain’t paint by numbers, figure it out.

SFH are the norm in my area, period.

I think you living in the Bay area distorts what's going on across the rest of the US. Townhouses aren't everywhere.. not to mention the added HOA fees if u do move into one.

The problem is inflation. Rents allowed to be raised by 50% plus upon renewal is insane.

Interest rates going from 3-4% to 7%+ with points is pricing people out.

I was ready to buy right before the pandemic... I waited cuz I'm a nurse and thought I should take the opportunity to stack more money.... but then housing prices exploded by 25% plus AND interest rates or a mess. I'm lucky because I have parents I can fall back on till the right time... but many people do not.

Post pandemic life came and shook the table. I personally will be fine.. but way too many people are not.

Sad that you even had to spell that out for her. People justifying living in 3rd world conditions on some unsanitized India shyt to make 3+ people live in a 1 bedroom apartment. :gag:

I'm not having these issues, but the increase of the cost of goods and services is crazy, especially when wages remain stagnant.
In Decatur, IL, it used to be "He make $20.00 an hour! He got a GOOD job!"

Now, even in this "cheap" ass city, 20 is the new 10

My first apartment was a roach infested room that I rented in a shytty part of town. It was filled with a bunch of foreign exchange students that smelled bad and had awful hygiene. My family, girlfriend, and side piece all clowned me when they saw how I was living.

It's amazing hearing y'all complain about how hard you got it at a young age :heh:

Now I understand why the older generation talk about how entitled young folks are :scust:

What year was that?

shyt like that I am glad that I stacked up and made good money after the age of 22 at home and saved enough money to pay off a condo when I moved out when I was nearly 28 years old. Having not to pay these current exploitative rent prices while living in a safe, clean area is priceless for your peace of mind.

Too many people want others to struggle to NOT have a collective workers rights movement again.

That apartment is huge. It's bigger than some houses I've been in

Guarantee its a luxury apartment that's been built in the past five years and she walks outside right into a nice downtown area

Despite living downtown and paying high ass rent, she has a car. How much are her payments+insurance versus just walking to her neighborhood store or biking to work?

No roommates at that age?

She's just an entitled gentrifying bytch that thinks she's special.

I'm happy for you that you got to bond with your roaches and funky neighbors...

however, here in the richest country on the planet, no educated, non substance addicted citizen that works 40+ hours a week should have to go through that shyt. F these greedy landlords and a system that only puts bandaids on problems cuz conservatives think suffering builds character.

Next your gonna accept cash strapped Americans bathing and shyting in the East River cuz clean water running from a faucet equals woke / entitled.

That's a lot of assumptions.

SFH are the norm in most places in the US and they’re reason there isn’t enough housing. Again, building multifamily housing is more efficient, better for the environment, and more cost effective. Builders need to change and people need to adapt. Y’all can continue to lament what once was, but what we built from 1950-2000 wasn’t sustainable, those of us in HCOL areas experienced the fallout starting in the 00’s and now the rest of the country is. In these 20 years it hasn’t gotten better, so that tells us we need a paradigm shift. Again, adapt and get involved or whine.
