1.In California the only beef you see is when there is a boxing match. Plus there is not many Ricans here, and they act like chicanos if they grew up round Mexicans. Mexicans usually have beef with other Mexicans who are from a different state. Like NY vs Ca vs Fla, but instead it's Michoacan vs Jalisco vs DF, and it's mostly ball busting not actual hatred. Or they'll have beef with other Central American groups.
2. You cannot compare a Mexican to a Rican cuz PR is a small island that takes a couple hours to drive from one end to the other, so it's a small group that mingles together. Mexico is a fairly large country with different states and regions, each of which have their own vibe. There's people in the Yucatan who have very little in common with someone from say Sonora.
according to different sources there are about 30% mexicans who are full blooded indigenous in the country. But not all of them are from the same group. Theres Mayan, Mixtec, Zapotec, Nahua, Tarasco etc.. That's why I roll my eyes when people refer to all Mexicans as "Aztec". Places with the largest populations are in the South and central Mex cuz I guess it was easier to plant crops there, plus the north is basically a desert.
The reason why many Ricans don't see themselves as looking like Mexicans is because most Ricans live in the northeast US, and most Mexican immigrants in the Northeast US are full blooded indigenous folks from the south. Sadly when these people started migrating to the Southwest USA, they would get discriminated against by Mexicans who are from the North and West of Mex, who are basically mostly Mestizo/ Mixed. When a Mexican calls another Mexican a "Oaxaca" he's usually insulting him. It's like light skinned black folks hating on dark skinned black folks.

Map of racial mixing in Mexico
A Rican in the Southwest USA will get confused for being Mexican, cuz a lot of the Mexicans come from areas where the people are lighter skinned. If they're a Black Rican they get mistaken for being a African American.
Would these dudes get mistaken for being another form of Latin American on the East Coast? They're all full Mexican btw.
