Disney CEO Bob Iger Confirms Star Wars Standalone Movies - IGN

Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed rumors that there are indeed standalone Star Wars movies in the works in addition to the next Star Wars trilogy.

In an interview with CNBC, Iger said the studio will make different Star Wars solo films during the same time frame as the new trilogy will be released.

"We are in fact working on a few stand-alone films," said Iger. "(Lawrence) Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga. So we plan to make Star Wars VII, VIII and IX over roughly a six-year period of time starting in 2015. But there are going to be a few other films released in that period of time too."

Iger would not confirm, deny or comment further on any of the Star Wars characters who might get their own standalone movies. Everyone from Yoda to Boba Fett to a Seven Samurai-style Jedi team film have been rumored as candidates for possible Star Wars spin-off movies.

they're gonna milk the hell out of this
I've been saying for YEARS there is an absolute gold mine in the star wars franchise.. if they started releasing high quality movies like super-hero movie genre is doing now. They would make BILLIONS. There are so many great untapped stories in the universe, its just dying to be made into a billion movies.

Not every secondary character in the franchise needs a film...Its gonna water down the entire brand/legacy putting out half assed films every year about ewoks and sandpeople...

The first few will probably be known characters. Disney would be crazy to hinge one of these standalone movies off some new unknown character, at least for a while. They are about making $$$, not taking artistic chances. Doesn't mean the movies cant be good, but if you are looking for something really original with all new characters in that universe you are gonna be dissapointed for a while.

I think if you do parts 7-9 and introduce new characters then its possible you can spin off new characters into movies and it might work...for me personally i have very little interest in a stand alone movie about Yoda or Boba Fett...They are interesting only within the concept of the original movies not as entirely different subplots :manny:
