Report: Comcast Considering Merger With ViacomCBS To Create Mega-Streamer :smugbiden: good call

| JUNE 23, 2021 | BY: ANTHONY PASCALE

Following speculation by industry analysts, a new report indicates that media giant Comcast is considering making a bid for ViacomCBS to shore up its streaming strategy. While at the same time, ViacomCBS is making some internal moves to prioritize streaming at Paramount+, home of the Star Trek Universe on TV.

Comcast CEO looking at ViacomCBS in bid to become streaming giant
Comcast may be the third-largest media company in the world (trailing Netflix and Disney), but the 2020 launch of Peacock has failed to put it into the big leagues in terms of streaming. Today, the Wall Street Journal reports that CEO Brian Roberts wants to change that and is considering a number of options, including mergers and acquisitions. According to WSJ sources, Roberts is considering bids for Roku and ViacomCBS as possibilities. The stocks of all three companies jumped today due to the report.

As we reported last month, media analysts see more big deals coming following the AT&T deal to merge Warner Media with Discovery and Amazon’s acquisition of MGM. Bringing ViacomCBS and its Paramount+ service into Comcast “would make Comcast a contender for the No. 3 spot in the streaming industry, behind Netflix and Disney,” according to Bloomberg Intelligence analysts.

In addition to bringing together Peacock and Paramount+, a merger would also potentially combine Universal Pictures and Paramount Pictures, with all the entities having more resources available. These kinds of moves would likely have an impact on the Star Trek franchise both on Paramount+ and in terms of theatrical releases. Although any deal bringing ViacomCBS into the same entity as NBCUniversal would create regulatory challenges and likely require some assets to be spun off.

For now, it’s just speculation, but Wall Street is taking it seriously. While the re-merger of Viacom and CBS did bring some more scale, the company is still dwarfed by the likes of Comcast. With the market clearly indicating bigger is better when it comes to media companies and streaming, even if nothing happens with Comcast, it’s likely some kind of deal is in ViacomCBS’ future
I doubt Comcast gets approval for that. Hell Disney owns Fox and ABC so Comcast owning both CBS and NBC is too much consolidation.

SUN VALLEY, Idaho — Media tongues are wagging about what potential streaming collaborations might be brewing in the wake of this week’s Allen & Co. conference for tech and media moguls.

The powwows between media bosses at the Sun Valley confab reached a new level of intensity this year, including meetings between bosses at Disney and Netflix as well as at Comcast and Viacom/CBS, one source told The Post.

“It’s like speed-dating” one conference attendee said of the frenetic pace of meetings at the Allen & Company conference. “Everyone is on everyone’s dance card.”

Comcast CEO Brian Roberts, who has been reportedly mulling a potential acquisition of media assets, met with ViacomCBS Chair president Shari Redstone on Wednesday, according to an attendee with knowledge of the sitdown.

“Shari, Brian, and the major sports commissioners — like MLB’s Rob Manfred and NFL’s Roger Goodell have really made the rounds,” the attendee said.

On her way into Sun Valley cafe Konditorei, The Post asked Redstone about her meeting with Roberts.

“I meet with everyone,” a perky Redstone replied before grabbing a latte and heading off to a 9:40 a.m. session hosted by the King of Jordan.

It's in there, the core Discovery network channels will be on there.

Discovery+ allows streaming of programs operated by the Discovery company such as HGTV, Food Network, TLC, Investigation Discovery, Animal Planet, Travel Channel, and Discovery Channel. They also have content from Discovery's other assets and exclusives varying by country.

In the U.S., Discovery+ also carries a selection of programming from A&E Networks' A&E, Lifetime, and History, as part of a licensing agreement.[14

VIACOMCBS AND COMCAST COULD MERGE

by BOBBY BURACKa day ago

Welcome to the next chapter of the streaming wars, Chapter III: The Merger Phase.

Over the weekend, Bloomberg followed up on speculation that ViacomCBS could merge with Comcast’s NBCUniversal by reporting that NBCUniversal employees have said the companies would now “like to merge.”

Netflix had an early and dominant entrance into the streaming space, but now that the market is oversaturated with streaming options, competing companies have responded with mergers and acquisitions.

It began in 2019 with Disney’s $71.3 billion purchase of the film and TV assets held by 21st Century Fox. Next, Disney used the acquired library to launch Disney+ and bolster Hulu. With that, Disney made a splash with an industry-shifting package that bundled Disney+ with ESPN+ and Hulu.

The Disney bundle is the blueprint. In May, AT&T spun off WarnerMedia and merged it with Discovery Inc. WarnerMedia and Discovery are now positioned to create a bundle, pairing HBO Max and Discovery+ with a forthcoming CNN OTT service.

Media executives and analysts have suggested that Comcast could follow in AT&T’s footsteps by merging NBCUniversal with a competitor, then siphoning it off into an independent company.

A potential NBCUniversal-ViacomCBS merger would pair Peacock with Paramount+, ViacomCBS’s rebranded streaming service. NBCUniversal-ViacomCBS would offer an enticing alternative to Netflix and Disney with Peacock’s WWE rights, Sunday Night Football, The Office, and Paramount+’s CBS NFL games and original content.

Essentially we’re headed towards cable all over again, which is weird since a lot of people didn’t realize this is how cable was essentially created in the first place……

Paramount+ sign a deal with Charter communications for cable, streaming and capital for future streaming projects.
