I thought streaming could empower artists when it first became a thing, instead these artists are getting raped even harder. Music execs are some of the worst people to exist in show business.

It's because internet streams pay significantly less than radio plays and the streaming platforms (iTunes, Spotify, GooglePlay, Tidal) have lobbied against the FCC for raising those payout rates to match the rate of a radio broadcast.

1M plays on the radio:
100k usd

1M streams
3k-6k depending on the service...

Yeah, industry is hurting artists...not helping them.

That’s what a lot of people don’t get. Back then, you’d spend 10-15 on an album. Now, you can play every artists’ entire discography for 9.99 a month.

These artists aren’t eating off royalties anymore. Who really listens to radio? The only way they can make serious money is through endorsements via social Media or live touring.

It’s a shame though, this generation are missing out. Back then you could spend hours in a record store and discover a new band/musician by mistake. Whether it was a vinyl, cd or cassette. Just having something tangible made it that more special. Reading the credits, producers etc.

You just don’t get the same feeling downloading an album digitally.:francis:

@KENNY DA COOKER make it make sense :damn:

Find Out Who Makes $2,000 A Day Off Of Diddy’s “I’ll Be Missing You

If only Sean "Diddy" Combs (then Puff Daddy) simply asked Sting for permission to use “Every Breath You Take” before the fact, then Andy Summers, Stewart Copeland and Diddy himself would be allotted their fair share of "I'll Be Missing You" copious royalties.

How much royalties you ask?

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Sting (and Sting alone), fattens his pockets with a cool $2,000 a day. In fact, every penny of royalties that is generated by both “Every Breath You Take” and “I’ll Be Missing You” ($730,000 a year) will continue to trickle into the bank account of Mr. Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, reportedly, until 2053.

A little background history on the ordeal: Diddy "forgot" to ask for permission for "Every Breath You Take," which subsequently allowed Sting to take legal action to receive 100 percent of the royalties generated by “I’ll Be Missing You." Had Diddy gotten the okay to sample the song, Sting would have probably gotten only around twenty-five percent of the royalties.

lol didn’t Sting perform that’s song with Diddy at some award show? Diddy probably thought he would get some days taken off lol

This ain’t even the worse sampling story. The song “DeJa Vu (Uptown Baby)” by Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz, sampled “Black Cow” by Steely Dan.

Initially, Diddy was going to sample it for the “No Way Out” album and was willing to pay a hefty price for it. However, Peter and Tariq released the song without getting sample clearance.

Apparently, a bass player who was in the studio at the time of recording said they were completely ignorant of where the sample came from. Stating: “who the fukk is steely Dan? They should be thanking us, this sample will make them well known.” :francis:

Well, Steely Dan and Diddy were obviously pissed. The former took 100% song writing credits. Also:

These CACs are cold.:francis:
