And Diddy is supposed to be this business genius
Let me ask you something if I told you right now you could sample a popular song. The song will be a top 5 smash record. You won’t make any money off the direct sales of the song. But it will attract listeners to other songs on your album that you will make money off. You’ll also tour the world making $100k+ a show performing the song. You’ll also have all types of companies paying you to promote their product in the music video of the song. Are you telling me you would not take that just because you’re not making any money directly from the song?

that decision was actually some bullshyt though, diddy could've won that case with the use of the fair use doctrine.

Although a fair use issue, Combs and Bad Boy never raised the legal concept of the fair use doctrine in their defense.[9] This decision was questioned by some legal experts: Anthony Falzone of the Fair Use Project at Stanford Law School criticized Combs and Bad Boy for not defending the legality of sampling and suggested that they might have refused to raise such a defense because they feared it could later imperil their control over their own music

So... Bad Boy decided it'd be better to pay Sting than risk future musicians making a come up by sampling Bad Boy records?

Talk about crabs in a barrel...
