This ain’t even the worse sampling story. The song “DeJa Vu (Uptown Baby)” by Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz, sampled “Black Cow” by Steely Dan.
Initially, Diddy was going to sample it for the “No Way Out” album and was willing to pay a hefty price for it. However, Peter and Tariq released the song without getting sample clearance.
Apparently, a bass player who was in the studio at the time of recording said they were completely ignorant of where the sample came from. Stating: “who the fukk is steely Dan? They should be thanking us, this sample will make them well known.”
Well, Steely Dan and Diddy were obviously pissed. The former took 100% song writing credits. Also:
These CACs are cold.
