I unfortunately like you get most of my information from the preppers / white survival sites but over the years Ive read enough to know the basic
I like this site for supplies, good prices/variety of things
Emergency Essentials | Food Storage & Emergency Preparedness Supplies
IMO the three most important things to have for short term disasters is
1. food
2. water
3.light source
Water is obviously important for drinkin, but more importantly can be used to cook/clean both things which boost personal moral
Food in any disaster is the first thing the goes i remember after sandy just for fun i walked mile or so to my local supermarket and all the isle were empty it was like this for a week, I haven't done it yet but by the end of this summer i will start bulk buyin food

Light/power source is the one to me where most ppl even ones that prepare slightly like you and me are lacking , flashlights/candles/lighters only get you so far ( i own a bunch of each)
this the generator i plan to get you can run basic stuff in your house for like 12 hours on a full tank of gas , again this is a short term solution as assuming the country doesn't go completely "black" no pun intended
Duromax 4,000-Watt Air Cooled OHV Gasoline Powered Portable Generator-XP4000S - The Home Depot
my personal goal is to be prepped for a 3 month disaster by the end of this summer
am driving right now so ill drop my amazon "survival" items list later
