In '87, Jerry Rice caught 65 passes and averaged 16 yards/reception, scoring 22 touchdowns
In '88, Jerry Rice caught 64 passes and averaged 20 yards/reception, but scored 9 touchdowns
Apparently, 3rd-year Rice was just a horrible player compared to 2nd-year Rice, right?
Do you think Jerry Rice was twice as good a WR in '87 as he was in '88? Do you think the '87 version of young 2nd-year starter Rice was the greatest WR in history? [fwiw, he only had 3 catches for 28 yards in their wild card loss that year] Or do you figure the fact that he was averaging MORE yards per catch in '88, but just happened to score fewer touchdowns, shows that the TD number largely was due to where his offense happened to be on the field and random variance than some sudden difference in his abilities from year to year?
Casuals will never understand something like random variance. They always believe that if a # is in the box score, it must have some deep meaning.
