DeMar DeRozan had multiple conversations with LeBron James in the offseason. His agent, Aaron Goodwin, worked feverishly behind the scenes with the San Antonio Spurs’ front office to get details ironed out on what would have been a sign-and-trade package to send the 13-year free agent veteran to his hometown team, the Los Angeles Lakers.

DeRozan, 32, believed everyone was on the same page, but the Lakers silently began exploring another route once Russell Westbrookwas made available in Washington.

The talks between the Lakers and Spurs tapered off. Reading the tea leaves, Goodwin pivoted his client in the direction of the Chicago Bulls.

“I felt like going to the Lakers was a done deal and that we were going to figure it out. I was going to come home,” DeRozan told Yahoo Sports after scoring a game-high 38 points to lead the Bulls to a 121-103 victory at Staples Center. “The business side of things just didn’t work out. A couple of things didn’t align. It didn’t work out. It’s just part of the business, part of the game. My next option was definitely Chicago. So, looking back at it, it worked out well.

Demar is the 1A/1B option along with Lavine in Chicago, and a de facto leader based on his age/experience alone there. Neither would have been the case if he were a Laker.
Westbrook's confidence in his offense is not where DeMar's is. Bron would love letting someone else cook and get buckets... He's done this his entire career when teaming up with other prolific scorers.

Westbrook jumper isn't reliable enough for the Lakers to feel comfortable with him getting baskets. That wouldn't be an issue if DeMar was in Purple and Gold

Is he at the top of the MVP race for the moment?
All due respect, but does it really matter?

I mean, there's far too much unnecessary discourse on who's the MVP. It just distracts us from appreciating players' performances for as they exist in the now. At the end of the day, there can only be one MVP, and it's not always the best player; it's the player with the best narrative. There's like 10+ players who're tracking to have great seasons and they should be treated as such, because they all can't win that accolade.

Demar is strengthening a HOF bid if you view his career macro. He's gonna be an All-Star and All-Pro again, and you're gonna be able to trace his career with other mid-level stars of his time from PG to Butler to Booker to Klay to Simmons to Tatum to several more, and be able to weigh his game and impact vs others who are assumed HOFers...

And this is a different Demar than Toronto Demar, it's clear as day his feel for the game and control on the court are what's different. Chicago is in a really, really good spot, and the top of The East is wide open. Bulls, Nets, Bucks, Heat are the Big 4, Bulls have as good a chance as any to come out The East...

Demar doesn't have to press with another elite scorer next to him, he's never had that...
