He did nothing redeemable in this film to wven give him a shadow of doubt
For him to really get away, the whole way the hood scene went down before he got murked would have had to go differently. He only "get's away" if he gives the Russians their money. One of two ways that happens: he beats Jake fair and square or one of the hood dudes claps jake for him. The former would be boring and would deprive us of one of the best scenes of Denzel's career (King Kong ain't got shyt on me). The latter would paint the hood dudes as nikkas willing to play lackey to a corrupt cop for some bread. Now if he just manages to escape the city and the Russians, we ever really get the full weight of Alonzo's desperation and why someone who was probably just a corrupt cop who lined his pockets turned into a murderer. We're told why, but seeing the consequences is more powerful.

Alonzo being murdered was kinda forced though. The way the Russians easily found him while driving in the street is hard to do in LA. Vince Vaughn in True Detective got found the same way. I'm like
