Even now, a smart money hat is Minecraft. It has sold over 5 million on the Xbox, at $20 a pop. As we like to say in hip hop and having their ear to the street, Microsoft has their's to the street, in a far better fashion than Sony or Nintendo. That is why their success is coming like this. As I said, Europe next gen is the next frontier then after that, Japan will have no other choice but to bow down.

The Xbox already has the UK on lock, but it's the rest of Europe they need to concentrate on. Europe and South America were the big territories that the Xbox lost ground to the PS3 and they need to figure out what pitfalls they need to avoid taking to ensure that it doesn't happen again. At least Microsoft and Sony are still competitive in those two territories so it's not a long shot MS can re-take them next gen... but Japan on the other hand will never happen unless Sony and Nintendo both fall.

Japan's resistance (or xenophobia) to western games goes back generations, I was reading about the loops and hurdles Naughty Dog had to go through JUST so they can get Japan behind Crash Bandicoot.

You shouldn't be this upset that the ps3 passed the Xbox in worldwide sales...it was inevitable

Of course it was going to happen, but the games and the developers that makes said games, aren't affected in the slightest. Far Cry 3 sold 1 million in the states in December and 2/3 was on the 360. That game sold Papoose numbers in Japan.

Crazy how the Ps3 underperformed this gen. Selling roughly half of ps2 units.

nah its just a sign of where things are going. Next generation might be even worse in terms of numbers for the traditional consoles. I would assume that the max any console moves would be 70 million once this upcoming gen is done. The market is changing, but this makes you guys on here extremely uncomfortable so I wont even bother getting into it.

No, I simply don't buy that. Sony, and to a lesser extent, Nintendo, aren't focused companies.

December 2005 v. 2012

2005
PS2: 1.5M
GCN - 470K
XBX - 415K
6th Gen systems subtotal: 2.38M
X360 - 281K (supply constraints)
Home consoles: 2.66M

GBA/GBM - 1.2M
PSP - 1.12M
NDS - 1.07M
Handhelds: 3.39M

2012
X360 - 1400K
PS3 - 625K
WII - 475K
7th Gen systems subtotal: 2.5M
WIU - 460K
Home consoles: 2.96M

3DS - 1250K
NDS - 470K
PSV - 225K
PSP - >50k
Handhelds: 1.97M

Home consoles are holding, it is the handhelds that are faltering due to mobile devices. THAT market has changed. The Wii U isn't anything to go on. The Wii caught lighting in the bottle from the inception. The Wii U is all sorts of wrong for this market. It, again, is something that is for Nintendo fans to play Nintendo games.

I will not believe the market has changed here in America until I see the next Xbox shytting it up at retail.

if it wasn't for the Wii exploding this console generation would have sold less than the last one. Traditional consoles and games are not selling the same anymore. You don't see it? Look at this past year...arguably the best games were all xbla/psn/steam indie games. (Journey, Mark of the Ninja, Dust, Walking Dead, Fez etc etc) This causes a problem because most of those games can be ported to a number of devices due to their nature...I can see something like Mark of the Ninja being able to run on the iPhone/high end android or windows phones pretty soon. The Wii carried this generation to a grand total of about 250 million total consoles sold (compared to about 202 combined last gen). I truly feel that if Nintendo would have just dropped a traditional console we would have never reached 200+ million with the way the xbox 360 and ps3 have performed this generation as a whole.

My MOM bought a Wii :russ:

You are right about handhelds...I think everyone can accept that at this point.

My point is that the 360 is selling better at this point in it's lifetime than the PS2 was during it's lifetime. It is 1.8 million behind the PS2 in America and 2.3 behind the Wii. How much is a Wii? $99, how much was the PS2 in 2005? $129? The cheapest Xbox is $199.99. You can't tell me that the market has changed yet the 360 is going to end up as the best selling console ever in the United States this year.

About games. those games that you've mentioned are fantastic and port away, however, like I've mentioned recently, timed exclusives are the new exclusives and Microsoft will continue to do that. As far as games selling, games do sell, there are a lesser amount of games on the market but there are quite a few games that sell well. The xbox 360 has the highest attach rate of any console ever. These issues that you are stating are correct for the Japanese consoles but they haven't proven themselves to be correct on the Xbox 360. Minecraft can be purchased on PC, Xbox 360 and mobile devices. It sold 5 million on XBox, granted it can be played elsewhere, the 360 is the only console that can run it. A money hat that was very smart for Microsoft.

Wait you are looking at this on a month to month basis in comparison? I just looked over your breakdown...that's not fair. I would think that the XBOX 360 is outselling the PS2 at the same given time (7 years in) because of 2 things:

1)...the PS2 had already crushed everything in its path with what I am sure is 120+ million sold at that point

2) The ps3 and 360 were already out for a while when the PS2 was in its 7th year. Cats have to remember that this is the longest gen ever...it really hasn't done as well as some people think it has in terms of numbers pushed.

The Wii pushed this generation because of all the casuals that were interested in it because it was new...the fact that this generation is 7+ years deep already and took a 1 time event like the Wii to even push to 250+ million is not a good sign IMO. The console landscape is changing...gaming as a whole is changing and its a very interesting time. So what I am getting at is that the previous generation (which was about 5 years long vs 7) would have outsold this generation if it was not for the Wii....in 2 years less time.
