Yeah, not a DeBarge fan, personally, but MTV had been out for 4 years by the time Rhythm of the Night dropped so the fault lies with the label for not pushing them.

Hell, they got more promotion when El guest starred on Facts of Life....

What's really funny is this is one of 2 of the ONLY songs I like from them.

Don’t forget punky Brewster

Motown was way behind the curve on videos. They were still an independent company and didn't wanna spend the bread.
The only acts to get video on Motown in the 80's were RIck James, Stevie Wonder, and Lionel RIchie.
Who can forget Dennis Edwards and Siedah Garrett's Don't Look Any Further video?
This one dude had a hit on Motown but he had to pay for the video and shoot it himself.

Saw this youtube comment

one of the greatest and most overlooked songs in R&B history...the rhythm guitar riffs literally make me cry...produced (and played) by the legenday guitarist Al McKay, after he left Earth Wind & Fire...i always imagined him staying with the group and Philip Bailey singing this (no disrepect to Finis Henderson) with Verdine playing the bassline and Maurice on drums...but it wasnt meant to be😥

That whole album is great. Never heard of him until I randomly found this song on YouTube a few months ago.
