DeBarge had a lot of drug problems and were facing life in 88.... probably a factor
The group Debarge drug issues weren't really affecting them professionally until the 90s. El said he didn't start messing with drugs until after the group broke up, he said he started off with some pain pills he got from his dentist then moved on to harder stuff as time progressed. But still 85 percent of the music business is on drugs I think mismanagement from the label stopped the groups from reaching their full potential.DeBarge had a lot of drug problems and were facing life in 88.... probably a factor

Nah watch their Unsung the whole group had drug issues. Really El was the only one who wasn't during their run that's why Motown started pushing him to the forefront and putting their chips behind him but even he eventually fell victim to itThe group Debarge drug issues weren't really affecting them professionally until the 90s. Woah Woah Woah!!!! I understand your point breh but I would never describe the best black business America has ever seen(Motown) messed up. But you're right a lot of employees did not get their just due while working there. Just like Amazon today.I'm glad more people are starting to see just how messed up Motown became. Imagine letting The Jacksons leave just because you want to pay them extra as song writers. It actually was a blessing because if they stayed then they never would've worked with Gamble & Huff.
That was only Bobby and Chico breh who were not members of the Motown version of the group. Bobby had been kicked out of switch since the early 80s and was a heroin addicted male prostitute by that time and Chico put out a solo album that bricked 2 years before and was back in the hood trying come up like the 50 Boyz....they were trafficking cocaine and were facing a life sentence in 88.
Bobby was kicked out? I thought he left cus he wanted to do solo stuffThat was only Bobby and Chico breh who were not members of the Motown version of the group. Yeah I'm thinking Motown never really had plans for the group like that. They were probably cool with just eating off of their publishing.

But here's Howard Hewitt from Shalamar mentioning it from his short time working there. He doesn't go into detail though.

They were just looking for a replacement for The Jacksons.Yeah I'm thinking Motown never really had plans for the group like that. They were probably cool with just eating off of their publishing.
I'm not saying that they weren't drug addicts because they definitely were. I'm saying the drugs didn't hinder them professionally. Bunny said herself they never got high while working only during their down time. Look at it like this Whitney was on coke from the age of 13 until she left us and she still was the biggest star in the world.Nah watch their Unsung the whole group had drug issues. Nope. That song is tailor made for a music video too. It shoulda been them performing in front of a crowd in a high-school gym or cafeteria in letterman jackets but nahthere wasnt a video for I like it?
