100 plus is the going rate for an above average nba starter. Stars are signing for 180-200 plus this summer. Y’all gotta recalibrate what an nba contract is anymore. If FVV was up this summer he’d be offered the same exact contract.
I get that it's a tough pill to swallow, because the figure seems crazy. But you're right, I think Brunson at 23-25 range is fair value. Not a bargain, but fair value.
it's also not a move that handcuffs the Knicks to a treadmill like some heads act. If they're looking to move contracts for cap space, then the return would probably be a TPE. Brunson, abundance of picks, a roster of mostly under-25's, and a sizeable TPE or two would leave New York with plenty of flexibility. Especially considering they're guaranteed to not have cap space once they start extending their developmental guys like Mitch and RJ.
They haven't done enough to inspire faith that they'll thread the needle and land a star. But they have the tools at their disposal to make changes to the roster, be that dumping contracts or chasing stars or something in-between. The important thing is, a Brunson deal isn't the last move in any sequence.
One more note: They have cap space to chase Brunson just by moving any one of Burks, Noel, Cam, Fournier, or Rose...but that also means that if there's a bigger fish available, they also have paths to more cap space too...and I think Cam and Rose could fetch some kinda assets (not sure what level of value though) and even Burks might.
