If I'm not mistaken, they just can't exceed the luxury tax apron in the process. I think that by doing it that way though, they wouldn't be able to go above the tax to re-sign an RFA (aka Mitch). But that part's where the cap stuff gets too wonky for me to follow.

Where I think this gets kinda interesting is that they chased a TPE yesterday. I laughed at it but Fournier for an 18 million dollar TPE plus the 16 million that the trades they did make produced equals exactly 34 million dollars (rescind Mitch's rights and it gets close to the 37 that I believe is Zach's supermax). They want TPE's to facilitate bigger deals. Idk if it'll work out, but that seems to be part of the plan.

And I'll mention the big name again...Brock Aller is a cap genius in the most literal sense.
Could we do a sign and trade for Zach for Fournier and Nerlens? Then use all our picks to go get Murray? Hypothetically of course.

Some of y’all did criticize this team in not being aggressive in going to get their guy. If they really value Brunson, or it turns out they had somebody else completely in mind that we’re not even aware of this would be exactly the type of thing we’d hope they did to make sure they get that guy…
They're blatantly loading up picks to make a swing at a star while perserving cap space. The reporting sucked initially but we did good. It's disappointing because we didn't land a star but the draft sucks, so much so that I think the guy we just signed (Montero) is just as good as first round pick Tyty Washington. That gap from 11-60 wasn't that big outside of Duren and Williams ( Branham and Eason too imo), and we have Mitch so they would've been redundant. This draft fukking sucked, i stated before i wanted them to trade out and they did, and got 3 first rounders out of it. After hearing all of the details i can't be mad at them.

I feel like they're gonna try to package the vets with picks to sweeten offers. Build around Quick, RJ, Toppin and hopefully keep Duece, Grimes, Sims if they're solid by year 2. They may have to give up a lot of picks to dump Foolius. The rest of the vets are easily negotiable.

The knicks are in win now mode so these future could be 1st round picks don't make sense...
Those future picks will come in handy when we have use them to dump Brunson's contract in two years

If I'm not mistaken, you can only include one player in a sign and trade. But I've gotta look that up again. The cap rules are so damned weird it's hard to keep up with. I think that's why the TPE becomes important. If they can get a TPE, then they can use that as center-piece and mix and match all those picks they've stacked.

What @RickyGQ described is legal.

Yea. But we’re here now. At least they’re acknowledging the mistake instead of sitting on their hands and letting the contract expire in the name of being conservative.

And what if they’re clearing cap space for a guy like Zach Lavine? If anything this draft and every other draft by this organization has taught us, it’s that NOBODY knows what this front office is planning until it’s done. Writers were scrambling last night trying to figure out what the trade even was and all their sources were clearly from the other teams. I like Brunson and I’m sure that’s who the target is, but i wouldn’t be surprised in the least if that’s not who this is all for and they’re just letting everyone make their educated guesses on who the Knicks covet.

I don't get this narrative.

Reports were out for a minute that they wanted Toppin.

Reports were out for a minute they wanted IQ or Maxey.

Reports were out for a minute they wanted McBride.

Reports were out for a minute that they want Fournier.

When smoke comes out, there is fire. The surprises have typically come from having to back track and move picks around when they can't get who they're reported to (Duarte, Ivey). I think Reddish was the only exception to that.

Side note: We got one of the most creative ball-handlers/passers in the entire draft. Matteo Spagnolo is prolly the only other guy with flare and flash like this.

That's two of the five youngest players in this draft class to New York.

Didn't realize they picked him up. Cool.

Always appreciate your perspective, it's always informed and always gives me the desire to be hopeful. I have none, but I appreciate it nonetheless.

That thoughts been about the only thing keeping me sane about all this.
