fukked up situation

Wonder how Queen Latifah and the rest of them contracts was looking like

the problem isn't so much the contract itself

its the fact that these labels are now entering into licensing agreements with Streaming services such as Spotify who only feel obligated to compensate the labels as opposed to the artists

particularly "legacy acts" like De La Soul whom contracts were signed long before digital revenue became a factor

Add to the fact the huge conflict of interest presented by major labels such as Tommy Boy parent label WARNER have financial stakes in most of these streaming services..

Idk if anyone mentioned it, but why don't they re-record their biggest hits? Alot of bands (Living Colour "Cult Of Personality" is the first one that comes to mind) have done it to get al their money. You can record a new master recording of old songs and own the new version

might have to do with sample clearance..they mention that's still an issue

"De La Soul’s back catalog has been in a state of flux for years. Warner Music acquired the rights to the group’s Tommy Boy Records releases in 2002, but concerns about potentially uncleared samples prevented the albums’ release. In 2014, the group gave away parts of its discography for free online, but only for one day."

Tommy Boy claims De La owes them 2 million dollars. So they are holding the catalog hostage

The music is coming back tho. I'm going to have to treat it like Prince catalog. I know its wrong to stream it, but it is what it is...

How you a conscious MC, but your paperwork aint right :stopitslime:
:rudy: De La Soul are Entertainers... Not Black Revolutionaries

And the Entertainment Business particularly at that time during the 80s and 90s was a straight up MAFIOSO hustle

And every Entertainer was subject to getting HUSTLED

De La Soul was no exception..

Their label boss Tom Silverman was groomed by the Mafioso made Man MORRIS LEVY

It was inevitable

And no one back in those "real hip hop days" was exempt

Regardless how "conscious" they came across

and this included Public Enemy and Brand Nubian

You gotta keep in mind this was the same era where "snakes" like LYOR COHEN... TOMMY MOTTOLA...CARA LEWIS.. CRAIG KALLMAN..& TODD MOSCOWITZ basically earned their stripes by exploiting the artists...

At the end of the day their was NOTHING "GOLDEN" about the GOLDEN ERA in terms of revenue for hip hop artists
:manny:
